Saleen Racecraft RC2 Focus - Speed on a Budget

The Ford Focus is hot right now. Thanks to rising gas prices, Ford's econobox has enjoyed a serious spike in sales the last few months while big cars and trucks on on the decline. It should come as no surprise that a hot Saleen version of the car is in the works.

Tuner cars have been the rage for quite a few years now, thanks to Sony's Gran Turismo video game and the "Fast and the Furious" movies. It only makes sense to offer a tuned version of the Focus, and Ford has done it in the past with the much heralded SVT.

Following the recently introduced Saleen Racecraft Mustang is the Racecraft Focus RC2, which was introduced at this years Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit. The car will go on sale no later than the first quarter of 2009.

According to Saleen product and program planning director Julie Zona, the RC2 "offers an exciting aesthetic, great handling, and just the right amount of performance."

The biggest selling point is the price, which is expected to be under $20,000. The RC2 will be available to enthusiasts who otherwise may not be able to afford a tuner car.

Here's a list of what that $20,000 will get you:

* A 1.6-in.-lowered Racecraft sport suspension with new specific rate springs, unique performance valves, and heavy-duty anti-roll bars.
* Larger brakes supplied by Saleen SpeedLab
* A unique dual-tipped exhaust top produce "a healthy growl"
* A Racecraft-tuned version of the Focus' 2.0L Duratec four-cylinder
* 18-in. aluminum alloy wheels with new Bridgestone rubber
* A four-piece body kit featuring a new mesh front grille and three-part rear wing spoiler
* Racecraft graphics

If you're the type of person who's always dreamed of a tuned up Mustang but are more on a Focus budget, the Racecraft RC2 could be right up your alley.

500hp Hurst Challenger to debut at SEMA

The legendary maker of shifters, Hurst, has announced that it is teaming up with Dodge to offer a special edition Hurst/Hemi Challenger for 2009. Much more than just a simple trim package, the Hurst will sport at least 500 supercharged horsepower.

"The new Hurst/Hemi Challenger is more than just another musclecar," says Nate Shelton, chairman of Hurst. "It epitomizes the performance industry's tradition of taking the best Detroit has to offer and adding 21st-century performance parts to make your ride faster and cooler than the other guy's. Hurst has a long history of doing just that with guys like Don Garlits, Warren Johnson, Dick Landy, and even celebrity racers Steve McQueen and Jim Garner. The new Hurst/Hemi Challenger is the first of many Hurst Performance Vehicles to come. We are ready to make some more history."

Detail are scarce at the moment. The car will feature Hurst polished five spoke wheels and a classic Hurst "pistol grip" shifter, of course. Production will begin in 2009 after the car has debuted at the SEMA show in November in Las Vegas. No price has been announced yet.

Special edition variations of the Challenger are no surprise as much of Ford's success with the Mustang has been a result of the dozens of variations of it's Mustang. While some enthusiasts like to poke fun at the endless varieties, it generates press and creates interest in the base cars for those who can't afford the big sticker special editions. Expect to see much of the same thing in the future, perhaps with Chevy's new Camaro also.

2009 Saleen Mustang Lineup

In 2009, Saleen Mustangs will be moving a little upscale. Much like your modern automotive manufacturer, Saleen can afford to bump up it's models now that it has a "base model" in it's Racecraft brand. The line will also be limited since production of the 2009 Mustang is rumored to be limited to around 45,000 units to make way for the new 2010 model.

“The campaign for the year is titled ‘the Pinnacle,’ as we intend to solidify Saleen’s position as the leader in exclusive performance vehicles,” says Marques McCammon, General manager at Saleen Automotive. “My vision is to move the brand up with more exclusivity in every model, with fewer, more substantive offerings.”

For 2009 Saleen will feature a new wheel design, various exterior details, and a special interior treatment specific to each model. The S302 model will feature 580 horsepower in S trim level.

The heritage models will be limited to two special editions, a continuation of the Dan Gurney model and a "Super Saleen" that will put out an as of now unspecified amount of power.

Add some Mustang S Style Wheels to spice up your 'Stang from AmericanMuscle.

2009 Cadillac CTS-V First Look

Cadillac is on a mission. Long have they played second fiddle to the likes of BMW, Mercedes, and other luxury auto makers. For a brand once known as the "Standard of the World," they weren't just going to lie down and give up to the Germans and the Japanese.

GM as a whole has been on a roll lately. The new Malibu is receiving praise, the Corvette ZR1 will be terrorizing roads soon. The new Camaro is making huge waves. The newly redesigned CTS sedan was crowned as Motor Trend's Car of the Year. And they follow up with a out of the park home run, the new CTS-V.

As you would imagine, the new "V" is powered by a small block. It was developed along with the ZR1's powerplant and features such racy items as a dry sump oil system and the saddle-mount twin intercooler bricks that allowed the LS9 to limbo in under the Vette's low hoodline.

The same quiet, efficient, four-lobe blower design is used, though it's a bit smaller and makes less boost (8.7 psi versus 10.5). Using LS2-like valvetrain restricts the Caddy's redline to 6200 rpm, while the ZR1's low-mass bits tolerate 6600 revs. Befitting the sedan's statelier nature, the Corvette's loud-mode exhaust is ditched in favor of a quieter system with four catalysts and a modest resonator (it's quiet, but for resonant drone at 1500 rpm). The sound is dominated by pleasing V-8 induction noise embellished with a bit of supercharger whine.

The bad Caddy puts out 556 hp at 6100 rpm and 551 lb-ft at 3800 rpm; that's down 82 horses and 53 lb-ft from the ZR1's power peak, but, more important, it trumps rivals like the M5 (by 56 hp and 168 lb-ft) and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG (by 49/86). In Europe, the Audi RS6 has Cadillac outhorsed with 571, but that naturally aspirated spinner falls short by 72 lb-ft of twist, and AWD bloats its weight-to-power ratio to equal that of the CTS-V-7.7 lb/hp. And only Cadillac offers a no-cost choice of six-speed transmissions: paddle-shifted planetary automatic or a proper three-pedal stick.

Both the stick and the automatic cross the 60-mph mark in 4.1 sec, but taller gearing in the manual's first three gears blunts its quarter mile slightly (12.4 sec at 117.1 mph versus the automatic's 12.3 at 117.5). Either transmission performs comfortably ahead of the M5 (4.5, 12.5@114.9) and E63 AMG (4.3, 12.7@113.0). If you're looking for autobahn supremacy opt for the manual, which tops out at a reported 193 mph in sixth, while the automatic is limited to 175 to protect the transmission.

All of this power is routed through a heavily revised suspension. Second-generation Magnetic Ride Control shocks, like those on the ZR1, work magic in expanding the envelope of comfortable ride and sharp handling. Tour and Sport settings offer completely different control logic. Each has the bandwidth to go full-firm or full-soft in an instant, but Sport elevates the baseline damping control and lowers the thresholds of steering, braking, or road inputs that trigger a damping-rate change. Tour provides supple ride comfort with reasonable body-motion control on twisty, imperfect public roads, but when running hard on a smooth track or up a mountain pass, Sport curtails roll and pitch far more aggressively by instantaneously transitioning to high jounce-damping rates at the wheels on the outside of a turn and high rebound-damping on the inside, or full jounce front/rebound rear during braking.

The CTS-V uses Brembo brakes on all four corners, with six-piston front, four-piston rear calipers chomping on huge 15.0-in. front rotors featuring co-cast technology (iron braking surfaces and cooling vents cast around an aluminum hub and spokes). The 14.7-in. rears are all iron. An optional track package swaps traditional bolted iron/aluminum rotors for the co-cast ones, eliminates the surface grooves (they compromise pad life in heavy track usage), and paints the calipers red. 60-0 times are around 105 feet.

Cadillac's new super four door CTS-V may or may not entice buyers away from BMW and Mercedes showrooms. Those types of customers aren't always enamored with quarter mile times and other performance numbers. But it may make them think twice. For those of us who appreciate a little burning rubber smell with our cushy leather interiors, the Cadillac CTS-V goes on sale soon.

Huge Mustang news of the day - pictures of 2010 pony emblem and hood

First we had the teaser pace car, a camouflaged 2010 Mustang. Now we have pictures of a redesigned Pony emblem and what is claimed to be the hood of the new 'stang. What's next, spy photos of the V6 models newly designed wheels?

For the record, the updated pony emblem was introduced to the world by papa Ford himself for media consumption. A side by side comparison between old pony and new pony reveals a stronger breed with a faster look and sharper lines.

A raised head with swept-back ears are complimented by a fiercer mane that makes the muscular, chiseled horse look sleeker and meaner. The tinted-chrome finish gives the badge a darker, more menacing look. If the tinted-chrome finish isn't quite mean enough for you, Ford will also offer a black-chrome finish for the first time, only on Mustang GTs.

"We wanted to give the Mustang pony a more realistic feel," said Douglas Gaffka, chief designer for the 2010 Mustang. "We lifted the head to make the pony more proud, tipped the neck into the wind to give it a feeling of greater speed and better balance. It's more chiseled and more defined and looks more like a wild horse."

Ford hints that the look of the pony gives clues as to what the finished '10 Mustang will look like. Actual details of the much anticipated car are some of the most guarded secrets at Ford right now.

And now for the scandalous speculation!

The folks at www.mustangforums.com have a teaser picture of what is supposedly an actual hood from a 2010 Mustang!

Even the poster of the picture isn't exactly sure of its origins yet, but it's believed to have come from the Ford Tool and Die open house a few weeks back. It doesn't look like any hood on the current Mustang, so there's a good chance it's the real deal.

It certainly looks similar in shape to the current Mustang's hood, and the large cowl-induction hump in the middle would explain the bulge we've seen under the camouflage in spy pics.

On the other hand, there's always the possibility that someone could have just written 2010 Mustang on a random hood just to mess with people. Still, it's a good looking hood, so here's hoping it's authentic.

As always, check back for any additional news, including soon to come interior color options!

KTM X-Bow - Coming to a highway near you!

Famed Austrian motorcycle builder KTM recently unveiled its first-ever passenger car, the 1650-lb, 240-hp X-Bow, and unlike most low-volume vehicles that are scary-fast and a bit dangerous, reports suggest this one will actually be street-legal in America.

Deliveries of the X-Bow are already being made in Europe and Asia. Up until now, KTM stated that the car would only be approved in the U.S. for use on racetracks. As Hubert Trunkenpolz, managing director of sales and marketing, now says, "We will do whatever is possible to bring the car to the U.S. -- that, I promise." Originally intended to be produced at a rate of 500 vehicles per year, the motorcycle builder has already gotten more than 600 requests for X-Bows from the U.S. alone.

The X-Bow is essentially unchanged from the car that is currently racing in the GT4 European Cup. The mid-engine sports car features Audi's 2.0L, TFSI turbo four-cylinder coupled to a six-speed manual transmission making 240 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque between 2000 and 5000 rpm. When combined with a VW-sourced limited-slip differential, this powertrain rockets the little roadster from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 3.9 sec.

KTM is currently looking to partner with VW/Audi for assistance in clearing any legals hurdles that may get in the way of introducing the car to U.S. roads. However, Trunkenpolz believes the company will do what is necessary to make this happen, saying, "At the end of the day we want to see this car on the streets in America." Given its many unusual features -- among other things it lacks a full windshield, instrument panel, heating system, and doors -- buyers will most likely be required to take a class to help them understand the X-Bow's dynamics and handling, but after that they should be free to hop in the car and take to the streets.

So line up thrill seekers. For those of you who think the Lotus Elise is too soft or offers too many creature comforts, you car will soon arrive.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro V-6- Not your typical rental car

There's no question that when it comes to Ford's venerable Mustang, the V-6 is the bread winner of the family. While most enthusiasts scoff at the notion of such a thing, it is necessary for the pony car's survival. The rental car companies have to have them, as well as a largely female demographic. So it's no surprise that the new Dodge Challenger and Chevy Camaro are also being offered with a 6.

With the Camaro, however, Chevy is going a slightly different route. The "base" DOHC, 24 valve 3.6L V-6 that if offers is one sourced from the Cadillac GTS, and it's a runner. Although final output hasn't been determined yet, Chevy admits that it's going to pump out at least 300 horsepower and should deliver economy ratings of 18/26.

The other good news is that not one, but two six speeds will be offered with the V-6: an Aisin manual and a HydroMatic automatic with wheel-mounted manual shift buttons (the V-8 manual will be a Tremec unit). All base Camaros will be equipped with an FE2 suspension package, though chief engineer Doug Houlihan says Chevy is "considering" adding, as an option, the uprated FE3 suspension that will be standard on V-8 cars.

Base tires are 245/55R18 M+S BFGoodrich Traction T/As on 18-in. alloys; optional rubber will include 19- and 20-in. Pirellis (the latter available in summer or snow versions) plus an available 21-in. wheel-and-tire upgrade (summer only). Brakes are single-piston calipers all around, with cast-iron rotors (12.1 in.) up front and aluminum discs (12.4 in.) in back. (All Camaro V-8s will sport bigger, four-piston Brembo binders and a larger master cylinder for improved brake feel.)

An optional RS package will include the 20-in. rims plus HID headlamps, a rear spoiler, and door-sill trim, among other upgrades.

Chevy has been recording 6.1 second 0-60 times, but their goal is to get it down to 5.9 seconds. Top speed is an electronically limited 155 mph.

Base price will be set in the low to mid 20K range.

While Chevy has a lot of ground to make up for the Camaro to be successful and long lasting, it appears to be doing the right thing. For once, even hardcore enthusiasts won't be able to scoff at a base model. And maybe even some of them will be getting their doors blown off by one.

Hennessey HPE600 Challenger with up to 725 horsepower!

Like most people, you most likely haven't even seen a Challenger yet. It's a very new model after all. Not only has John Hennessey seen one, he's already offering a tuner model with substantially more power than the stock version.

For years Hennessey has offered insanely tuned Dodge Vipers that defy all normal human logic with their ridiculous horsepower and earth moving torque. Now, thanks to the generous boost used on the Challenger HPE600, Hennessey Performance Engineering is offering kits that can take your 6.1 liter Hemi equipped Challenger up to 725 horsepower.

Hennessey will offer kits that boost power to 500, 530, and 575 hp while remaining naturally aspirated. Between 600 and 725 hp is availiable with the boost, using either a supercharger or turbocharger.

"The Challenger does a lot of things very well and the factory SRT8 is a great car to start with," said company founder John Hennessey. "Unfortunately, it's a big car weighing over 4,000 lbs. So, while we can't remove 800 lbs from the car, we can add another 195 hp."

Hennessey took the HPE600 turbo model with 620 hp and 650 lbft of torque to the track and ripped off an 11.9 second quarter mile at 121 mph. Also offered is a suspension kit, which features unique bushings, larger anti-roll bars and coil-over shocks and springs. Also available is a brake kit with StopTech pads and lightweight rotors, a shift kit for the transmission, polished aluminum Hennessey five-spoke wheels and either Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires or Nitto drag radials.

And of course, none of this comes cheap. The HPE600 turbo kit will lighten your pockets by $29,500, or $74,950 for a complete turnkey car.

2009 Dodge Challenger R/T

The original Dodge Challenger R/T was a rather large car, especially compared to Ford's Mustang and Chevy's Camaro. The new R/T is no exception, it is a big car. The Challenger was, and is, the conveyance for a decade that spawns America's obsession with the muscle car.

The 2009 model has 6.4 inches more wheelbase and 6 inches more overall length, making it a full size car by any one's estimates. Because it shares the Chrysler 300/Charger firewall, it is longer than those cars despite being 4 inches shorter in wheelbase.

To be fair, the Challenger R/T has to be long and large to support those classic looks complete with massive blind spot inducing C pillars. If you complained because the Charger was introduced with four doors, the Challenger is your traditionalist ride.

Another reason to celebrate this occasion of retro cool is the introduction of a six speed manual, a Tremec T6060 adapted from the Viper, but with lighter clutch action. The 6 speed is available on the SRT and R/T only, the V-6 SE comes with a four speed automatic. The row your own box comes with a modern adaptation of the original pistol grip shifter.

By now you are familiar with the 6.1 liter, 425 horsepower Hemi. The R/T's 5.7 liter version puts out 370 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque with the five speed automatic, 375 horsepower and 404 lb-ft when equipped with the six speed on premium fuel. Fuel economy drops 1 mpg in the city with the stick, but the manual equipped cars also come with a specially tuned exhaust with a nice burbly sound.

The R/T forgoes the SRT's high-backs in favor of low-back buckets. The popular equipment package gets you such SRT standards as leather interior, Boston Acoustics six-speaker, 276-watt amp, satellite radio, heated front seats and Keyless Go. A "Classic R/T" package adds functional hood scoop, Challenger script badge, body-side stripe, and 20-inch wheels (up from 18s). The R/T shares two color options with the SRT, Hemi Orange and, available "later," B5 Blue. R/Ts get body-colored rear lip spoilers; SRTs have black spoilers.

Starting at just under 30K, the R/T is a bargain compared to it's big brother SRT, and is similarly priced with Mustang GTs, Pontiac G8 GTs, and probably the Camaro SS instead of $40,000-plus BMWs, Audis, and Corvettes. It's also in the same price range as the John Cooper Works Mini.

The R/T has a nicely sorted suspension for highway cruising. But tipping the scales at 4050 pounds, it is by no means meant to take tight curves or be an autocross racer. This is a refined cruiser, much as you would expect from a big and heavy American coupe.

And that's just what Dodge intends it to be. The R/T runs slower to 60 than a similarly priced Mustang GT, around 5.5 seconds. And it's fuel economy won't win you any new tree hugging friends, at around 16 city and 25 highway. The joy in owning a Challenger of any breed is to have a car that is guaranteed to turn heads and cause envy as you tool down the highway.

2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

638 horsepower and 604 lbft of torque, astounding numbers indeed. "Shock and awe" was the initiative from Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter, and it appears that it has been achieved. Juechter's goal was more performance with a higher level of refinement, added in with a series of technological advancements. What they ended up with was the most powerful car in General Motors 100 year history.

Anything more than a 2500 rpm launch will simply melt the Michelins. The MSRC system detects a dragstrip launch and programs for zero jounce and 100-percent rebound stiffness to encourage maximum squat (and rear weight transfer) with no wheelhop. Acceleration to 60mph comes in a GM estimated 3.4 seconds.

Close-ratio spacing puts the engine at about 4500 rpm, keeping the exhaust backpressure low (the muffler valves open above 3000) and the backpressure on the driver relentless through 90 mph. A shorter jump to third brings 4900 rpm, and if you keep shifting up at the 6500-rpm redline, the quarter will flash by in a conservatively estimated 11.3 seconds at 131 mph en route to a 205-mph top speed (established in a two-way average at Papenburg, Germany). If you're heading downhill or with the wind, you may hit a limiter at 210 mph.

The huge four-wheel carbon-ceramic brakes scrub speed tremendously. The run-flat Pilot Sport PS2 ZPs exhibit tremendous grip and instill confidence that more speed can be achieved than most are willing to use. But fear not, for Chevrolet will pay for it's ZR1 buyers to attend racing school, probably at Bob Bondurant in Phoenix or Spring Mountain in Pahrump, Nevada.

Here's some more numbers to digest: 1.01 g steady-state lateral acceleration, more than 1.2 g braking grip, and a 0-to-100-to-0 mph time of under 11.0 seconds, besting the Dodge Viper and Shelby Cobra benchmarks by at least a second or two. Oh, and let's not forget Mero's production-car Nurburgring lap record time of 7 minutes 26.4 seconds.

All of this visceral performance comes at a price of course, and that price is fairly high for a Vette. Starting off at $105,000, you can add up to $10K to the price by opting for hand-stitched leather, full-power/memory seating, and a Bose Nav/audio system.

Which is all and good for the Lambophiles and Ferrari fans. But for those of us who don't need wild boulevard head turning styling, the ZR1 will do just fine.

2008 Gurney Signature Edition Mustang

Dan Gurney is joining the likes of Carroll Shelby and Parnelli Jones, rolling out a version of Mustang to slap his name on. This car is a very limited edition, with only 300 being produced. And much like his rival's cars, his is very fast.

Gurney hasn't participated in a race since 1970, but his popularity hasn't declined any. His resume includes four wins in Formula 1 world-championship events (including one in his own Eagle F1 car), seven Indy Car victories, five NASCAR wins, and countless first-place finishes in sports-car events.

Since 1970 Gurney has been the owner of All American Racers, a team that has accumulated 78 victories including the 24 hours of Daytona and Indy 500.

The Saleen built Gurney Signature Edition Mustang sports a supercharged 4.6 liter V-8 boasting 465 horsepower. All those horses flow through a 5 speed manual with short throw shifter and into a 3.73 geared limited slip rear. Suspension is a Racecraft design with a Gen-II Watts-Link rear end (a first for a Saleen), which lowers the car's roll center and helps keep the live axle centered under the car (improving handling balance). Tires are high-performance Pirelli P Zero Corsas (285/30ZR-19s in front, 285/35ZR-19s in back) on five-spoke Heritage Edition gray alloys. Brakes are 14-inch vented discs with four-piston calipers up front, 11.8-inch vented discs at the rear.

Visual mods include a Gurney body kit, duck bill rear spoiler, hood pins, and custom graphics. The interior has been upgraded to a leather interior with Alcantara inserts, boost and air temp gauges, and Gurney's own signature on the dash.

The Gurney Mustang produces 35 less horsepower than the Shelby GT500, but by looking at the timeslips you'd be hard pressed to tell it. The trip to 60 takes only 4.3 seconds (identical to the GT500). The quarter mile flashes by in 12.9 seconds at 111.3 mph (compared to 12.6 for the Shelby). Braking performance bests the GT500 at 108 feet, compared to 118. The Gurney also outperforms the Shelby on the skidpad, pulling .96 g's of lateral grip compared to .89.

Saleen offers the Gurney in just three colors: Performance White, Torch Red, or Vista Blue. Price for the 300 cars will run around $58,000.

Dan Gurney is clearly happy to finally have a production car he helped to produce, saying "It's a wonderful thing to have a Mustang with my name on it." And despite the influx of special edition Mustangs currently on the market, the Signature Edition is a welcome addition.

Electric Supercar, the Italdesign Quaranta

Motor Trend recently had an exclusive test drive of an outrageous new electric car, the Italdesign Quaranta.

This futuristic, fighter jet canopied car features a central driver's seating position and was designed by the same man who brought us the Lamborghini Gallardo. Instead of a roaring V-10, the Quaranta makes a lot of noise by making none at all.

The Quaranta is indeed a mid engine car, one sporting all wheel drive. It is entirely overwhelming in design quality, concept, and execution. And unlike most show ponies, this one is built to be driven as it most certainly was less than 60 days after making it's show circuit debut.

Italdesign and Toyota have a great relationship, so it's no surprise that the powertrain is sourced from the Lexus RX 400h. Toyota provided the 3.3-liter DOHC V-6 engine, electric-motor assist hardware, continuously variable transmission, and all-wheel-drive system, but the rest of the car has all been hand crafted by Italdesign.

The 3100 pound green muscle machine is rated at 268 total horsepower. Battery charging is assisted by Toyota's regenerative braking system and also by solar panels affixed to the car's front and rear horizontal surfaces. As functional and styling elements, the panels generate an additional 250 watts of free power, so long as the sun is shining.

The twin fuel tanks hold a total of about 16 gallons of gas and offer a claimed range of over 600 miles. That equates to around 37.5 mpg. 0-60 comes in around 5.6 seconds or so. This is no Lambo beater, but it does get roughly 3.5 times the gas mileage, after all.

Ford launches special site, contest for 2009 Mustang

With all of the hype surrounding the 2010 Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro, it's easy to forget that the model year also brings with it an updated version of Ford's venerable Mustang. The new 'stang will make it's official debut at the 2008 Los Angeles auto show on November 19th, and is expected to be on dealer lots by spring 2009.

In an effort to keep interest in the car as high as possible, Ford has created a new promo site for the 2010 Mustang. The site will feature lots of updated information on the car between now and it's launch.

In addition to carrying information on the soon to be released car, Ford is launching a "Mustang Stories" contest on the site beginning on August 27th. If you've got a great story to tell in 250 words or less, you could win a 2010 Mustang and a trip to the Los Angeles auto show.

The Mustang Stories contest will be whittled down to 25 contestents and then the voting will be done by internet visitors.

2008 Racecraft 420 S Ford Mustang First Test

Saleen Corporation is a little different nowadays. The guy who's name is the namesake of the company is gone. The company itself has merged with American Sunroof Corporation, which like Saleen has been trying to redefine itself in an ever changing automotive market.

Saleen Mustangs have turned into heavily finned and spoilered cars that are rather pricey, thus not for everyone. Saleen's response to this the the Racecraft brand.

Mustang fans will recognize Racecraft as a brand of suspension components produced by Saleen. Now it has become a name unto itself, a brand of car. Racecraft cars are supposed to be easy on the eye and the wallet, all with stirring performance.

The very first Racecraft Mustang is the 420 S, which Motor Trend has recently tested.

The folks at Motor Trend have tested pretty much every version of Mustang under the sun. It's quite refreshing that they find the 420 S to be "one of the most well-balanced, fun-to-drive, not-overdone Mustangs we've tested in a good while."

The package starts with a base model, no option Mustang GT. The main power adder is Saleen's twin screw supercharger, which incorporates and intercooler with the blower itself resting low in the engine bay.

The EMS is recalibrated and a 98mm mass airflow sensor is installed, along with a high-flow inlet tube and K & N air filter. The result is 420 hp, up from the stock GT's 300.

For the twisties, the 420 S sports Racecraft shocks and struts along with an anti roll bar. It also has 18 inch wheels, down from the 19 inch that Saleen's sport, wrapped with Bridgestone Potenza 275/40-18s.

Visual mods are limited basically to a huge "Racecraft" banner across the bottom of the doors, which hopefully is an option.

Motor Trend recorded a 4.4 second 0-60 time and a 10.4 second 0-100 time. The quarter mile came in at 12.9 sec @ 110.0 mph. Handling is firmer than stock but completely liveable.

The 420 S is offered in all stock Mustang GT colors. Leather and other upgrades are available, but will push the price above the $40K mark. Saleen specifically wanted to keep the price below $40K.

Overall the 420S is a nice piece for a nice price. It's a completely liveable car that can be driven without being too aggressive to handle in everyday situations.

While just under 40K seems like a lot of money, consider that a base GT runs around 25K. Add the supercharger, intercooler, piping, and suspension pieces, and it adds up to a pretty good deal. Unless you are proficient at installing parts and tuning cars, in which case you could save a few thousand by doing it yourself.

Should you lease, buy new, or buy used?

My 2006 RSX Type-SImage by nateOne via Flickr
Buying a car is always an interesting endeavor. It is both exciting and challenging, and sometimes scary.

Whichever of the above applies to you, there are basically three general options available to potential car buyers. To lease a car, buy a new one, or buy a used vehicle. Each has several pros and cons.

Leasing is a popular option for many. Typically your payment is lower than it would be if you just purchased the car with a loan. You can lease a car for so many years and then simply turn it in and lease or buy another one. The nice thing about a lease is that you aren't saddled with your purchase and it's declining value after the lease period ends.

Now for the cons, and there are many. The biggest downfall is that you are paying all that money essentially with nothing to show for it. Unlike a purchase, when the lease is up the car goes away.

Most leases also limit the amount of mileage that you can drive per year. This is a disadvantage to those that have to drive long distances or with any frequency.

You are also liable for any damages to the vehicle that are beyond normal wear and tear, so that means no street racing!

Buying a used vehicle is an attractive option as well. For those who are affluent in vehicle maintenance, this is the way to go. The previous owner has already absorbed the initial depreciation of the vehicle. On a slightly used, low mileage car you can save thousands of dollars. Most new vehicles come with transferrable warrranties.

If properly cared for, a used vehicle can be a far superior purchase to a new car purchase. The key is to look for potential damage or "lemon" qualities, along with checking to see if the car has been in an accident or has a salvage title. This can potentially be a nightmare if you are not educated in vehicle maintenance.

The final option is to purchase a brand new vehicle. This is a positive way to go if you don't know much about vehicles. Most new cars come with a warranty that ranges in length from 36,000 miles up to 100,000 miles. When you buy a new car you don't have to worry about the previous owner and whether or not there is hidden damage.

When properly cared for, a new vehicle will last for a long time. However, a poor credit rating can cost you a fortune in interest fees. As soon as you drive off the lot the car depreciates in value.

The most important thing when making any kind of committment to a vehicle is to do your research. Make sure that you don't just pick the car that you like because it looks good or has that electronic widget that you like. Choose a car that is reliable and dependable. Making a decision with your head instead of your heart will go a long way towards saving you money down the road.

Taurus X and Mercury Sable to be axed next year

2008 Mercury Sable photographed in USA.Image via Wikipedia
Keeping with previous chatter out of Detroit, it has been reported that the Taurus X SUV and the Mercury Sable are on the chopping block for next year.

Officials at Ford Motor Company are stepping up their efforts to significantly restructure it's lineup after multiple rounds of recent layoffs.

Word coming out of Dearborn is that the Taurus X crossover and the venerable Sable are being axed due to slow sales combined with the companie's efforts to produce smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles.

Rumors surround the demise of the Taurus X have been going around ever since the new Flex hit showrooms.

The decision to stop producing the Sable is in tune with Ford's vision to utilize Mercury as a critical outlet to sell small cars.

Last July, the Taurus X sold 2,304 units, down from the 2,705 the same time last year. The already slow-selling Sable managed only 2,276 sales last month compared to 2,589 a year ago.

Shelby celebrates Terlingua Racing Team with Texas "Bullrun"

A little known story among Mustang fans is that of Carroll Shelby and his Terlingua Racing Team. Shelby automotives plans to celebrate Shelby's racing lineage next month with it's first annual Shelby "Bullrun" Challenge deep in the heart of Texas.

The tale first unfolds in the 1960's in the town of Terlingua, Texas. A group of gearheads were approached by Ford to build Mustang racers. The group consisted of Carroll Shelby, Bill Neale, Dave Witts, Tom Tierney and David E. Davis, Jr, who willingly accepted the offer and ended up building the now famous GT350 and GT500 Mustangs. The group was famous for it's wild parties and fast paced lifestyles in between races.

The distinguishing mark of this crazy bunch was a yellow and black logo penned by co-founder Bill Neale. At the center of the badge was a rabbit with one paw raised into the air. With the bunny leading the charge on each team member's hood, the Terlingua's wreaked havoc on the Trans Am Series and quickly became notorious both in paddocks and on the streets.

After multiple wins and a lot of cars being built, the race team was all but forgotten until last year when Shelby rolled out its Terlingua Racing Team V-6 Mustang. According to Shelby officials, the main focus in building the car was to create an affordable, genuine Shelby Mustang capable of competing in all sorts of racing situations with ample power and handling prowess. From drifting and drag racing, to circuit and autocross racing, the Terlingua Racing Team Shelby Mustang aims to have everything covered.

In celebration of the team's past successes and future growth, Shelby Automobiles is hosting the Texas-style Shelby "Bullrun" Challenge at Terlingua this September 25 to 28. For three days, anyone that comes to the festivities in a Shelby vehicle (Mustang, Cobra, etc.), factory Mustang, or Ford GT will be able to participate in the variety of planned drives and events.

"We created the Shelby Terlingua Racing Team so our small group of rebels could have some real fun," stated Carroll Shelby in a press release. "Now, I'm inviting a new generation to return with me for a weekend they'll always remember."

Organizers have mapped out a 350 mile rally run, a 12 mile time trial course, airstrip track and half mile dragstrip for enthusiast wanting to burn a little rubber over the weekend. Other fun to be had at the "Bullrun" includes the mandatory car show, hole-in-one golf tournament, Texas "shootout", chili cook-off contest and autograph session with Carroll Shelby.

Ford to delay the release of Fusion GT and F-100

In some more discouraging news to enthusiasts, Ford has recently decided to focus (no pun intended) all of it's efforts towards it's line of Ecoboost engines. This means a delay in two of the expected recipients of said turbocharged engines, the Fusion GT and F-100.

The F-100 is a downsized version of the company's F-150 pickup, which has been rumored to replace the Ranger. It was scheduled to debut in three years. As part of its restructuring efforts, Ford is looking to double its hybrid and four-cylinder engine production by as late as 2011 and is planning the introduction of a number of EcoBoost powered models beginning next spring.

Through the use of direct-injection and turbocharging, engineers claim the EcoBoost units produce fewer pollutants, achieve greater fuel efficiency figures and make enough power to rival bigger displacement (and gas guzzling) engines.

First to get an all-new EcoBoost powerplant will be the 2009 Lincoln MKS sedan when it hits U.S. showrooms next spring.

Ford's ultimate goal is to increase the efficiency of the F-150 to the point where it doesn't need to build the F-100. So for now the project remains on the back burner.

"We have no intention of giving up our leadership in trucks," Ford's global product development chief Derrick Kuzak told reporters. "Fuel economy (will be) a reason to buy -- no longer a reason to reject -- Ford vehicles."

Ford powertrain head barb Samardzich told company officials the shift from V-8s and V-6s to four-cylinder engines will be a top priority despite initial capacity restraints. "You are going to see more four-cylinder capacity," Fields said. "The key is having the flexibility to respond to the marketplace, whichever way it goes."

In other, related news, the planned Fusion GT is off until the vehicle's next interation in 2012. The biggest obstacle in producing the GT isn't the fact that Ford is afraid to introduce a new performance vehicle, but rather the fact that the company is trying to roll out the EcoBoost for the Lincoln MKS first. The original plan was to produce the GT as an end of production, limited volume performance car. It will be more of an image car for Ford.

Ford is also discussing the possible use of ethanol technology to double the efficiency of it's EcoBoost engines. Produced by Massachusetts company Ethanol Boosting Systems LLC., the system utilizes an additional ethanol tank that automatically injects a small amount of the alternative fuel into the car's gas tank. According to the manufacturer, the ethanol only has to be refilled every 5,000 miles and will add $300 to $400 to each EcoBoost engine -- two compromises Ford is excitedly willing to deal with if the system does what it claims to achieve.

Kruse Auction to Feature 25 Hertz Mustangs

If you missed out on a chance to rent one of the 500 Ford Shelby Mustang GT-H convertibles from Hertz Rental, all hope is not lost. 25 of the specially made rental racers will be available at auction at the Concorso Italiano at Monterey Bay later this month.

Collectors of rare cars probrably won't mind the abuse that these cars have probrably endured as a rental car.

The original Hertz Shelby Mustangs have become quite the rare collectible since they were retired from duty. It's quite reasonable to expect the same kind of increase in value from the current stangs.

Ford officially unveils 2009 Mustang

Although most of the information has been leaked to the internet for some time now, today Ford officially unveiled the 2009 Mustang. The biggest news is the addition of a panoramic glass roof option along with ambient lighting, satin aluminum intrument panel trim, and Sirius Satellite Radio. Below is the official press release.

Ford Mustang, the country's best-selling sports car for 22 consecutive years and one of the auto industry's most successful nameplates ever, celebrates its 45th anniversary with a new panoramic glass roof option that opens the world to pony-car enthusiasts from Maine to Maui and all points between. The segment first, factory-installed glass roof is available as a $1,995 option on Mustang V-6 and GT models.

"Our new panoramic glass roof will allow owners to enjoy the outdoors year-round from the comfort of their Mustang," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president for Global Product Development. "It's one more feature that sets Mustang apart from the competition."

Three Roof Choices - Top That!
The glass roof joins the coupe and convertible to give Mustang customers three roof choices. It also addresses the fact that 62 percent of buyers in the sports car segment are interested in a sunroof or moonroof on their next vehicle, according to J.D. Power and Associates research. Mustang's new roof allows customers to let the sun shine in for half the price of moving up from a coupe to a convertible.

While allowing occupants an unrestricted view of the world above and around them, the special tinted, reflective glass reduces energy used by the vehicle's air conditioning system by 20 percent and also protects the interior fabric from fading and deteriorating. A manually operated roller blind allows owners to block the light on bright days.

Noise, vibration and harshness are controlled in the cabin with a layer of sound absorbent vinyl sandwiched within the special glass. The glass-roof Mustang is built like the coupe and has been developed to maintain the structural integrity of the car. "We want to offer this feature to customers while maintaining the quality and safety of the vehicle that we've been recognized externally for," said Paul Randle, Mustang chief engineer.

More Standard Equipment
For 2009, Ford has also added more standard equipment to the popular "Premium" arrays offered on both the Mustang V-6 and GT, including SIRIUS® Satellite Radio, ambient lighting, satin aluminum instrument panel trim and upgraded interior trim.

A new, optional GT Security Package includes an active anti-theft system and wheel locking kit and Brilliant Silver clearcoat metallic joins the list of available Mustang exterior colors.

The Mustang V-6 coupe and convertible are equipped with a 210-horsepower, 4.0-liter SOHC 6-cylinder engine that is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 5-speed automatic. The Mustang GT coupe and convertible are powered by a 300-horsepower, 4.6-liter 3V V-8 engine. The standard gearbox is 5-speed manual, with an available 5-speed automatic.

Other highlights include:
* Standard front-seat side air bags; dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags; safety-belt pretensioners; passenger seat sensing; crash severity sensing.
* Available High Intensity Discharge headlamps.
* 18-inch wheel offering on V-6 coupe.
* Available customizable instrument panel allowing mix-and-match lighting at the touch of a button.

Warriors in Pink
The 2009 model year also marks the return of the "Warriors in Pink" package, which was designed to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Ford doubled its contributions this year to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure to $500 for each "Warriors in Pink" Mustang sold.

Available on the Mustang V-6 "Premium" coupe and convertible models, the "Warriors in Pink" package adds a pink ribbon and pony fender badge, pink Mustang rocker tape striping, charcoal leather trimmed seats with pink stitching, an aluminum-spoke steering wheel with pink stitching and charcoal floormats with pink ribbon and contrast stitching. Three body colors will be available: black, metallic silver and performance white.

The development of the "Warriors in Pink" package took on a special meaning for the entire Mustang Team as they watched one of their own battle breast cancer and survive. Mustang program manager Jackie Marshall DiMarco was diagnosed with breast cancer while working on the special model.

"Being on Team Mustang is a special experience because we are all enthusiasts at heart. And I was thrilled to be part of the Warriors in Pink project knowing that we would be contributing to the Cure," said DiMarco. "The shock of my own diagnosis while working on this project highlighted to me how any of us can be affected when we least expect it, and how important it is to work together to heighten awareness, support the courageous women fighting the disease, and ultimately find the Cure.

"I am blessed to be a survivor while so many are still being lost each year to breast cancer and I am proud to work for a company that is committed to my survival," she added.

The seats in Bullitt, and in all 2009 Mustangs, are made with foam comprised of 5 percent soy-derived materials in place of petroleum-based products. Earlier this year, Ford announced plans to push that figure to 40 percent in the near future for foam used in seats and head rests.

The 2009 Mustang, including Bullitt and Warriors in Pink models, will be built at AutoAlliance International in Flat Rock, Mich. All 2008 Mustangs earned the government's highest five star frontal crash test ratings. The Mustang convertible stands alone as the only sports car and the only convertible ever to earn five star safety ratings in all five test categories under the government's New Car Assessment Program.

Apocalypse Now - Ford and GM to team up?

WASHINGTON - MARCH 14: (L-R) Ron Gettelfinger...Image by Getty Images via Daylife
The domestic automakers are in a rut right now, with the exception of Chrysler, which just posted a healthy profit for the quarter. Ford and GM are bleeding money fast, trying to keep up with the rapidly changing consumer needs.

The struggle facing both companies is the high cost of developing new, fuel efficient engines to meet customer demand. In a move that could help fuel both companies bring new cars to market quickly and lower costs, the two are discussing a possible collaboration to share engine and powertrain technology. Both automakers already have some new products in the pipeline to combat high fuel costs.

Ford will introduce the first in a line of EcoBoost engines next year, beginning with the new Lincoln MKS. GM will also be rolling out the Chevy Volt by the end of 2010 in a limited supply.

Collaborating on future powertrains and sharing current technology could lower costs for both companies substantially. According to reports GM actually approached Ford about joining forces months ago, and after Dearborn's board of directors voted to authorize further discussions there were three meetings between the two automakers regarding powertrain development. And while a formal agreement has yet to be reached, things are said to be progressing smoothly and covering a wide range of possible collaborations. Neither company will confirm or deny these reports.

This wouldn't be the first time the two automakers joined forces. Recently they both joined forces to develop a six speed automatic transmission that has been used successfully in several vehicles across many product lines today.

While this all seems like blasphemy to the die hard contingency of loyal Chevy and Ford fans, it really is a good idea. I for one have nothing against foreign automakers but I have grown tired of seeing them take over the market. What's wrong with Americans teaming up to make the country stronger, and helping to protect some of our blue collar work force?

A look back at the SVT Lightning Bolt Ranger

Ford's Special Vehicles Team has been known for producing several awesome rides, enhancing quite a few performance vehicles and some not exactly performance vehicles.

One that got lost in the shuffle was a prototype V-8 Ranger that unfortunately never saw the light of day. The Lightning Bolt started life as a regular cab flareside Ranger and was the brainchild of Dave Dempster, an SVT Powertrain Systems engineer. Dempster's goal was to build a small pickup "that would get your full attention on those occasions when the accelerator pedal might get exercised aggressively." Well by all appearances he succeeded.

Using many off the shelf pieces to simplify fabrication challenges and keep the costs down, the Lightning Bolt was a beast. In place of the stock 2.5-liter I-4 engine rests a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 transplanted from a 2002 SVT F-150 Lightning. This two-valve SOHC pumps out 380 horsepower at 4750 rpm and is backed by a 4R100 four-speed automatic transmission. Surprisingly the big modular motor fit the engine bay pretty well. The swap included the fabrication of new engine mounts, a new air intake, two-inch exhaust headers, and a three-inch stainless-steel dual exhaust system.

The battery was relocated from under the hood to the bed, and the large HVAC plenum was replaced with a smaller unit from an E-Series Ford van. Torque output is 450 pound-feet at 3250 rpm--more than enough to twist the stock frame into a pretzel.

To counter these forces, the SVT engineers boxed both framerails and added cross-braces. This meant replacing the production plastic fuel tank with a fuel cell mounted in the bed (filled through a Bullitt Mustang aluminum fuel door mounted inside the bed).

In the front SVT fitted SVT Lightning front springs, lower control arms, and steering knuckles were fitted to the Ranger's front end, then dropped two inches so the engine would fit under the stock hood. The Bolt uses a production Lightning rearend that's been narrowed almost 11 inches and fitted with 3.73:1 gears. The spring perches also have been relocated inboard to accommodate the massive 345/35ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires on widened 18x12.5-inch Lightning wheels (stock wheels are 9.5 inches wide). Up front, the rolling stock is 235/40ZR18s on narrowed 18x8.0-inch Lightning wheels.

To be sure the modified Ranger has adequate stopping abilities, SVT engineers fitted Lightning brake components all around.

In the 1/4 mile Dempster's little truck ran consistent 13.60's at 108 mph.

There are scores of enthusiasts that have converted Rangers and S-10's to V-8 power. It's unfortunate that we haven't seen a hot truck like this be produced by Ford or Chevrolet. And with gas prices in the stratosphere and the Ranger seemingly dying a slow death, it's unlikely we'll see it anytime soon.

702 Horsepower Audi RS6 R Station Wagon

Station wagons typically get a bad wrap. A popular option for hauling families back in the 70's, they were replaced with minivans in the 80's and SUV's in the 90's. The first image that pops into most people's heads when they think of a station wagon is a wood panel hippie-mobile.

Ok, so the Dodge Magnum changed that perspective a little bit. However, it will soon join it's brethren in the boneyard when it is discontinued next year.

Wagons are still the rage in Europe, however. With ten dollar a gallon gas most folks can't afford to drive a large vehicle. And for those with a little more money to burn? Enter the Audi RS6.

Devoid of giant spoilers and junky body cladding. The RS6 in normal clothing is an autobahn burner in it's own right. Sporting a twin turbo V-10 spouting out 580hp and 480lb-ft of torque, it's quite capable from the factory.

However, if you want to have the distinct pleasure of gobbling up supercars with a few passengers in tow, MGM has just the package for you. Engineers on the RS6 R project first looked to tweak V-10's computer element. After a remapping of the stock ECU system, MTM's initial step towards creating the ultimate grocery-getter produced 656 horsepower and a staggering 578 lb-ft of torque. A little too much perhaps for grandma to handle.

MTM wasn't satisfied yet, however, with an output that exceeds the Lamborghini LP640. They proceeded by adding a free-flowing stainless steel exhaust, ECU reflash and a reworked air intake system to the package. The end result is a ridiculous 702 horsepower capable of propelling the car to 100 km/h in a claimed 3.9 seconds. MTM can set up the car to easily hit 192 mph.

Keeping the power in check up front are available 15.9-inch six-piston grooved brakes sitting behind 21-inch forged Bimoto wheels. Exterior additions are conservative. They include a carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser and a more aggressive stance thanks to adjustable coilovers not only lowers the car, but also increases traction significantly.

The MTM RS6 R package with engine, suspension, and body mods can be had for a cool $24,000 on top of the purchase price of a donor RS6. The looks on that Ferrari owner's face when you blow his doors off in a station wagon : priceless.

Ford and Roush sued over Blackjack Mustang

File this one under the most ridiculous story of the day. Not one idiot, but rather 100 of them, have joined a class action lawsuit. The, um, individuals are suing because Ford Motor Company and Roush Performance Parts Inc. for building more of a limited-edition Mustang than promised.

The suit, created by Drew Connor of Bardonia, New York, claims the automaker reneged on it's plan to produce 100 examples of the 2007 Roush Stage 3 Blackjack Mustang. Drew claims that the pair conspired to produce 100 more examples of the car in 2008. Owners of the car paid upwards of $59,000 for examples of the car, which at the time believed it to be a rare example of Roush Mustang.

"The vehicles purchased by the plaintiff and the other class members were not as unique or rare as the defendants had stated them to be," the complaint stated. "Their value from scarcity and as collectors' items were and are dramatically less than the buyers had been led to believe their value would be." Connor and his associates are seeking 12 million in damages.

The Blackjack sports $27,000 worth of enhancements on top of the base car price. Key features include a 430hp 4.6l V-8 complete with supercharger, and distinct aerodynamic styling.

What I want to know is, what happened to the time when cars were more than collectibles? What really is the point of buying a car to hermetically seal it for 20years and then sell it for a profit? If you want to make money, buy an index fund, not a Mustang.

I would love to know how many of the people who purchased a Blackjack actually intended to drive it. My guess is zero. Every one of them purchased it as an investment. Why else would they whine and cry when Roush produced more? Cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed. It's sad that some people don't feel that way. I say mass produce these cars and knock the price down, just to rub salt in the wound.

They're a disgrace to the hobby.

The $39,623 Oil Change

Lamborghini Murcielago in Melbourne, AustraliaImage via WikipediaFor most of us, changing the oil in our car is as simple as buying a few quarts or taking our car to the local quik lube. When you live in Qatar and you're a Sheikh, things so simple can be a little more complex.

While I'm sure there probrably aren't too many quik lubes in Qatar, surely there is a better way to change the oil in your 2008 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 than to ship it to England, isn't there?

Apparently not. An owner of said car recently did just that. And it cost him a cool $39,623 for the service. The car took a 6500 mile round trip to get it done. Wouldn't it be cheaper to fly the technicians to the car instead of the other way around?

I guess such petty things don't matter when you have millions of dollars. So I have one message for sir Sheikh. Next time you need an oil change, fly me over to Qatar and I'll throw in a free car wash. Maybe even vacuum it for you.
