Photobucket

We got a glimpse of one of the first special edition 2011 Mustangs back in May when Ford showed us the DUB Edition package. Unlike most aftermarket focused Mustangs, the DUB is based on the V6 model, and sports a good number of body bits and pieces to give it a unique look.

In addition to the aero bits, the car features 20 inch wheels, lowering springs, 3:31rear gears, and some other niceties. The DUB Edition will be available next week at Ford dealers nationwide, starting with a launch party at Galpin Ford in Van Nuys California this weekend. Roush supercharger for Coyote 5.0 now available

Photobucket

Hot on the heels of Ford Racing's own pair of superchargers comes the latest power adder for the 2011 Mustang GT, the ROUSHcharger by none other than Roush. The Roush setup is based on the TVS2300 setup, which replaces the Eaton M90, was first seen on the P-51A Mustang and is now available to everyone with deep enough pockets.

The 90mm pulley brings boost up to 7 psi, and the supercharger features 47 lb. fuel injectors, high-flow fuel rails, a high-flow ROUSH air lid, and a twin 60mm throttle body. The kit boosts horsepower to around 550 with 470 lb-ft of torque, and can be had for a suggested retail price of $5,999.

Press Release

LIVONIA, Mich. (August 26, 2010) – Since the day Ford announced the new 5.0L engine for the 2011 Mustang, people have been asking, "What is ROUSH® going to do with that engine? When will the ROUSHcharger® be available?"

The answer to those questions is finally available. ROUSH has engineered a 5.0L ROUSHcharger Tuner Kit that can boost the horsepower on the 2011 Mustang upwards of 550 horsepower on stock pump gasoline with more than 470 lb.-ft. of torque. This 5.0L ROUSHcharger Tuner Kit (part number 421140) has a suggested retail price of $5,999.00 and is available for shipment now.

Many people got their first look at the 5.0L ROUSHcharger in the ROUSH display at Mustang Alley during the Woodward Dream Cruise. The display car got many double takes as people walked by, looked, and then realized that car was, in fact, a 2011 Mustang with a ROUSHcharger installed.

Based on the popular TVS2300 ROUSHcharger, the 5.0L ROUSHcharger Tuner Kit comes with a 90mm pulley and generates an estimated seven pounds of boost. Included in the kit are 47 lb. fuel injectors, high-flow fuel rails, a high-flow ROUSH air lid, and a twin 60mm throttle body. The heavy-duty ROUSH tensioner is included for the first FEAD belt.

This Tuner Kit includes a 90-day parts warranty, but does not come with a calibration or maintain the Ford factory engine warranty. Professional tuning and installation is recommended.

"While the new Ford five-liter engine offers amazing performance right from the factory, and the new ROUSHcharger will kick it up a level," said Jack Roush, motorsports legend and chairman of ROUSH Enterprises. "Our engineering team has worked hard to deliver a product that will satisfy the demands of the ROUSH customer on an extremely tight deadline, and they have come up with another great solution for a powertrain upgrade."

Orders for the 5.0L ROUSHcharger Tuner Kit are now being accepted by calling 1-800-59-ROUSH. Information can be found online at www.ROUSHperformance.com.

There will be a 5.0L ROUSHcharger Kit available this fall that will come complete with a ROUSH calibration and full warranty. Pricing and details to come.

Corvette Redline HTR-GS640/SC asks, why pay more for a ZR1?

Photobucket

In the world of ultra high performance cars, typically the old adage "you get what you pay for" is an applicable term. People who get into this sort of car, like the Corvette ZR1 or a number of other exotics, expect to pay big money for their big performance. But every now and then, a good value pops up.

In this case, that value is the Redline HTR-GS640/SC (try saying that ten times fast). The car has been dreamed up and built by Howard Tanner of Redline Motorsports and Dan Carlton of DeNooyer Performance, and is based on a base Corvette Grand Sport. Howard and Dan add an Edelbrock E-Force supercharger, a bigger cam, and tougher valve springs and push rods.
Photobucket
The end result is an $82,000 that is fully capable of embarrassing the more expensive ZR1 in a race. You can even get a warranty for three years or 36,000 miles, trade in another car, or get financing. Check out their website for all the details.

Video(s): Mustang GT vs. BMW M3

Out of all the cars the Ford Mustang is compared to, most are rear wheel drive, V8 powered muscle cars. This is a natural comparison. Most people expect a little trade off in ride quality, fit and finish, and other niceties when driving a muscle car. It's just part of the deal, right?

Well, maybe not so much. Fit and finish, along with ride quality, are on the rise with each new iteration of pony car. The newest version of the Mustang has by far the nicest interior and highest quality of any previous version. But is it on par with the BMW M3, in both quality and speed?

Well maybe not quality. But in terms of not only straight line quickness, but cornering as well, the Mustang can certainly hang with its dramatically more expensive German brethren. Just how well, you ask? You'll just have to check out the videos to see.

Ford 5.0 and supercharged 5.4 V8 now available as crate motors

Photobucket

Any time a new, more potent engine is announced in a current production car, the aftermarket crowd celebrates. Because whenever a new mass produced V8 is installed in a modern car, that means it is only a matter of time before the engine is available as a crate engine. And hot rodders are always looking for some new technology to add to their old school rides.

So all of you street rodders and Fox chassis Mustang enthusiasts can rejoice, as the new 5.0 is now available as a crate engine, and so is the aluminum 5.4 that powers the 2011 Shelby GT500. The 5.0 comes completely assembled with everything minus the wiring harness and powertrain control module that will run you an extra $1,499.

The Coyote 5.0 will set you back a reasonable $6,999, while the supercharged 5.4 will cost you a steep $20,999. But that's a small price to pay for car show trophies and the envy that will certainly ensue. Check out the Ford Racing site for all the specs and info.

Ford Racing offering supercharger kits for Coyote 5.0, boosts horsepower up to 624

Photobucket

With the introduction of the Coyote 5.0 in the 2011 Mustang, we've been anxiously awaiting the corresponding flow of performance parts. New technology is always exciting with performance engines, especially because it brings with it amazing potential for power increases by simply bolting on some aftermarket parts.

This past weekend at the annual Woodward Dream Cruise, Ford Racing showed off its new supercharger for the all new 5.0 V8, and its a thumper. Displacing 2.3 liters, the Whipple twin screw unit boasts an air-to-liquid intercooler and 47 lb/hr injectors.

The base package provides 525hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, which is backed up by a 12 mont/12,000 mile warranty when installed by a Ford or Lincoln dealer. The second kit pumps out a whopping 624hp and 536 lb-ft of torque, but does not come with a warranty.

The third option allows users to build their own custom system and choose a tuner kit, which comes with core components and needs to be independently calibrated so that it can work with the engine's computer.

Press Release

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Ford Racing has announced today the availability of a new, 2.3L twin-screw supercharger for the 2011 Mustang. When mated to the all-new 5.0L 4V TiVCT V8 engine, this 50-state-legal powertrain, can produce 624 hp SAE @ 6900 rpm and 536 lb-ft SAE @ 4700 rpm. This is the first Twin-screw unit available to consumers.

The new supercharger is Ford Racing's first power upgrade component for the new 5.0 engine. It was developed by Ford Racing engineers, in close collaboration with Ford Motor Company's powertrain engineers, Team Mustang, and key partners in Roush and Whipple. The supercharger is being seen for the first time Saturday at the annual Woodward Dream Cruise in Ford's Mustang Alley display.

"Superchargers are the ultimate in power upgrades for Mustang enthusiasts," says George Goddu, Ford Racing Performance Group Manager. "Calibration for a modern V8 engine, especially one with twin-independent variable cam timing, is incredibly complex. Production calibration for the 5.0 engine took 19 months. Having that knowledge base to work from is a huge advantage.

"In fact we had the whole engineering background of the engine right from initial concept," Goddu added. "With that knowledge base, and extensive collaboration across the team, we are able to offer a top-notch supercharger, induction kit and the optimum calibration. This results in great power, drivability and durability."

"After more than 100 hours of accelerated durability testing, the entire Ford Racing package performed flawlessly," reports Dev Saberwal, Ford Racing's lead calibration engineer. "Ford Racing performance parts are subjected to extensive testing to ensure optimum performance across a broad range of conditions."

This supercharger comes as a complete package, and it's available in three levels: a 525 hp kit with a 12/12 warranty; a 624 hp kit and a tuner kit for racing and extreme enthusiasts. Each of these impressive kits gives 2011 Mustang owners the opportunity to boost the performance of their cars to new levels.

Ford Racing Performance Parts offers a large selection of performance products from complete race cars to injectors. For Mustang enthusiasts Ford Racing's catalog of performance upgrades offers a range of enhancements for the 2011 Mustang as well as a wide range of power, chassis-system and appearance upgrades for 2010, 2005-2009 and earlier Mustangs.

Ford Falcon to get supercharged 5.0?

Photobucket

The Ford Falcon is at the center of America's jealous envy of Australians and their abundance of cool cars. The Falcon is a sweet piece of machinery, sporting rear wheel drive, a plethora of powerful V8 options, muscular styling, and a racing heritage. What more could you ask for? Perhaps a blown 5.0 Coyote?

And it appears that a supercharged 5.0 in a new Falcon is going to soon be a reality. In the press release for the Boss 302, Ford acknowledged that "the Mustang team knew a supercharger would be the simplest way to extract significant power improvements from the new 5.0-liter V8, but they elected not to pursue forced induction for the 2012 Boss to stay true to the original Boss 302 engine."

So the speculation is that the first supercharged 5.0 will find its home in the Falcon, and rightfully so. Now just get to work on making the thing available here in the U.S., Ford!

Hurst to turbocharge 50 V6 Camaros per year

Photobucket

When gas prices were through the roof a couple of years back, the hot rumor was that modern day muscle cars were going to give up their gas guzzling V8's, go on a diet, and switch to turbocharged V6 power. Well, a little time has passed and we have yet to see the death of the V8 powered muscle car, but there is at least one alternative now.

Hurst Performance Vehicles is rolling out their first ever turbo car in honor of 40th anniversary of the introduction of the BFGoodrich Radial T/A. The car is called the Redline Series Hurst, and only 50 examples will be built each year. The V6 is a 3.6 liter, which will be good for 360 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. Other mods include custom 18 inch wheels, pistol grip shifter, leather seats, and an optional gauge package. Check out all the details in the Press Release below.

Photobucket

For the first time in company history, Hurst Performance Vehicles is offering enthusiasts a turbocharged V6 powered Hurst branded muscle car with the introduction of the Redline Series Hurst Camaro. The company, long known for its highly collectible limited edition muscle cars, announced this new vehicle as part of a partnership with performance tire manufacturer BFGoodrich® Tires, highlighting its BFGoodrich Radial T/A® Spec Redline Edition tire in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Radial T/A line of tires.

The new Redline Series Hurst Camaro begins as an ordinary RS V6 from Chevrolet and is modified at the company's Irvine headquarters transforming into a modern muscle car that performs as well as it looks.

For the exterior, the Redline Series Hurst Camaro wears a unique combination of painted graphics and aerodynamic enhancements. An exclusive Hurst AIR-SPEED™ rear deck spoiler and specially designed five-spoke 18" Hurst T1 alloy wheels are unique to Redline Series cars and help finish off the exterior performance modifications.

The centerpieces of this special edition vehicle are its significant horsepower and fuel economy gains courtesy of forced induction via an STS Turbo. The STS turbocharger is remote mounted in the rear of the car to the Hurst Modified exhaust system. As a result of turbocharging, there is a 50% gain in rear wheel horsepower and additional torque, all the while delivering 30% better fuel economy than the stock Camaro SS with its 6.2 liter V8.

The added power is channeled via either manual or an automatic Hurst HARD-Drive "Pistol Grip" Shifters and put to the ground through the Hurst/Detroit Speed coil-over suspension, sway bars and special BFGoodrich Radial T/A Spec Redline Edition rubber. An optional gauge package is available and includes boost and exhaust temperature gauges

Just as one would expect, the interior is the standard of cool with Hurst/Katzkin leather seating finished with contrast stitching and embroidered Hurst logos, a real metal sequentially numbered interior dash plaque and logo-embroidered floor mats.

Only 50 of these vehicles will be built by Hurst each year and each comes with a custom Hurst car cover, a signed Certificate of Authenticity and signatures in the trunk from the Hurst Team to complete the car's provenance.

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 - The Boss is Back!

Photobucket

Years have passed as rumors of a revived Boss 302 version of the Ford Mustang have swirled around the Internet. The much beloved moniker just wouldn't go away, and with the return of the 5.0 liter displacement engine in the 2011 model year, it seemed almost inevitable that Ford was up to something.
Photobucket
And it turns out that they were. The Boss 302 name means raw, race inspired performance. And the new car doesn't disappoint. It features an upgraded clutch, short throw shifter, adjustable suspension, better brakes, and an upgraded 5.0 that puts out 440 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. Ford claims that the Boss will pull 1.0 g's on the skidpad, and lap a road course 2 seconds faster than the GT.
Photobucket
The outside mimics that classic Boss paint scheme in a modern way. Buyers can choose a black or white roof panel, and the car features a C-stripe, closed up fog lamp openings, and a very aggressive front and rear splitter for better downforce. Color choices include Competition Orange, Performance White, Kona Blue Metallic, Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat Metallic and Race Red.
Photobucket
On the inside, removal of sound deadening means that the driver will be able to hear the sweet sound of the high revving 5.0. A dark metallic finish adorns the instrument panel, gauge cluster, and door panel trim. An optional package provides Recaro seats.
Photobucket
Ford is also planning to release a limited number of Laguna Seca editions (see it in the second video below) that will offer increased stiffness along with a stronger chassis and an aero package.

Viper ACR Roadsters built for Woodhouse Dodge

Photobucket

Being the number one sales volume leader in Dodge Viper sales for 11 years has its perks. And when Dodge decided to end production of the Viper in its current form, Woodhouse Dodge put in a request for a convertible Viper ACR. And surprisingly, Dodge obliged.

Since the ACR is a car known for its downforce producing aerodynamics, the aero bits and pieces had to be massaged to work on a roadster - namely the rear wing and the front spoiler. Dodge built 20 examples of the car for Woodhouse, so interested parties should contact them in Blair, Nebraska. Price is a hefty $107,310, but how often do you get such a rare opportunity?

Dodge releases pictures of 2010 Mopar Challenger

Photobucket

Mopar has long been a name synonymous with Chrysler performance, and has also long been a supplier of go fast parts. The cost of entry is $39,000 for the manual transmission equipped version, or $38,000for the automatic. A hood scoop and some accent colors don the outside, while the inside sports Mopar logos, seat thread accents, and a new steering wheel. Drivetrain is the standard, untouched R/T spec Hemi.

Video: Classic Design Concepts Firebreather in action

The Smoking Tire was recently lucky enough to not only get to fool around in a 2011 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 convertible, but also a Classic Design Concepts Firebreather.

The Firebreather is what we would like to think a "new" Firebird would look like. And it sports a 6.2 liter V8 under hood with a supercharger on top, which helps it produce a more-than-adequate 600 horsepower. While the car was originally built for use in a movie, it is now being offered to the car buying public. Check out the video to see these two unique muscle car heavyweights go at it.

SR-71 Blackbird Ford Mustang sells for $375,000

Photobucket

Even with the slumping economy, one thing that will brighten your day is knowing that people with money still like giving it to charity. Or rather, exchanging it for a special kind of car - the SR-71 Mustang.

This special, one-of-a-kind Blackbird was built by Jack Roush and Carroll Shelby for this year's EAA AirVenture show. Every year an aviation themed Mustang is built and auctioned off to benefit EAA's Young Eagles Program. The Blackbird took in an astonishing $375,000, besting last year's car by a hefty $125,000. You can check out the full write up on the car here.

Press Release

Two automotive icons, legendary racer and manufacturer Carroll Shelby, and world-renowned racer, engineer and designer Jack Roush, have come together in their first vehicle collaboration project to join Ford in creating a one-off 2011 Mustang, the aviation-themed SR-71 "Blackbird." The one-of-a-kind vehicle will be sold at the Gathering of Eagles July 29 during the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) 2010 AirVenture Oshkosh, the world's greatest aviation celebration. Ford is the exclusive automotive partner of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and all of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the EAA Young Eagles organization. EAA AirVenture Oshkosh will be held from July 26 to Aug. 1 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wis.

The "SR-71" designation holds a dual meaning for the one-of-a-kind, fully-customized Mustang. First, "SR-71" refers to the car's design and performance-inspired connection with the SR-71 Blackbird, the aircraft that holds all official airspeed and altitude records and is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular planes ever produced. Second, "SR" represents the first collaborative project between Shelby and Roush. Mustang Chief Designer Darrell Behmer led design for the project and Mustang Chief Nameplate Engineer Dave Pericak led the engineering effort. Ford Racing Performance Parts were also added to further enhance the exclusivity of the car. The sale of the SR-71 "Blackbird" will highlight an evening of festivities at the EAA Gathering of Eagles July 29 during AirVenture.

The group that will directly benefit from the auction proceeds is EAA's Young Eagles, which has provided free introductory flights to more than 1.5 million young people since 1992, while also teaching the value of hard work, personal responsibility and enhanced math and science skills. "Ford Motor Company's historic tie to aviation is no better represented than by the company's commitment as a continued partner of EAA and AirVenture, a celebration of flight here in Oshkosh that is unmatched anywhere else in the world," said Tom Poberezny, EAA chairman and president.

"Ford's generosity in donating the Mustang SR-71 'Blackbird' to the Gathering of Eagles further demonstrates a dedication to supporting aviation and inspiring aviation enthusiasts of all ages."

In 2008, Ford's inaugural vehicle specially-built in support of the Young Eagles, the one-of-a-kind Mustang AV8R, raised a record $500,000 for the charity. "The excitement around the 2008 AV8R, our first one-off Mustang ever produced, inspired us to push for another, first, the collaboration of Carroll Shelby and Jack Roush," said Edsel B Ford II, a member of Ford's Board of Directors. "This year's SR-71 Blackbird is a special tribute to Ford's lineage of performance vehicles, as well as to the promising innovators of EAA's Young Eagles." Ford vehicles sold at auction during past EAA AirVenture events have collectively raised more than $1 million to support the Young Eagles.

The Mustang SR-71 "Blackbird" is Build #1 of 1 and presents a truly unique opportunity for collectors. The vehicle is based on a 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 with the glass roof option. Ford Racing performance modifications (Supercharger, Handling Pack, tuned exhaust, and exhaust tips) generate 100 additional horsepower from the all-aluminum 5.0L 32-valve V8 engine. The special racing Handling Pack optimizes the performance experience and lowers the ride height by 1-inch.

From there, the car takes on a design personality similar to that of the original SR-71 Blackbird aircraft. The Mustang's stunning design theme includes black and gray matte exterior paint with harmonious SR-71 themed graphic treatment, performance wheels, front and rear fascias and an integrated spoiler/wing to reflect the car's connection with its namesake aircraft, which made its inaugural flight in 1964, the year the first Ford Mustang came off the line. The "Blackbird" nickname is reflected in the car's exterior paint treatment, complete with markings from the liquids which leaked and streaked until the plane came up to speed. A unique screen print glass roof design and exterior artwork reflect the unbridled spirit of the Ford Design team.

The interior cockpit will seat only two and includes a roll-cage, racing seats and fire extinguisher, The signatures of Jack Roush and Carroll Shelby are embroidered into the seats, and special gauges and instrument cluster graphics have been added.

Enhancing the value and allure of the vehicle, the Mustang SR-71 "Blackbird" will feature an appliqué autograph area capturing Roush and Shelby's signatures and badging to further reinforce the uniqueness of the car. The vehicle will be on display at the Ford Hangar at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh beginning July 26.

Additionally, Ford and EAA will give AirVenture attendees the chance to win a 2011 Mustang GT convertible and other cash prizes in a raffle, with proceeds benefiting the EAA Young Eagles program.

During EAA AirVenture, Ford also will offer attendees access to the latest advances in automobile technology, as well as many of the industry's most revered classics at the popular "Ford Hangar" on the grounds of Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. Ford activities will include top-tier entertainment and interactive components that will add excitement for the hundreds thousands of aviation fans in attendance.
