Highly Collectible Pace Car to Benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer

Irvine, Calif. (April 20, 2010) – Hurst Performance Vehicles, a company responsible for some of the most iconic pace cars in racing history, will once again debut a special-edition Mustang built to serve as the official pace car for the 2010 Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Series.

The 2010 Hurst Mustang pace car will debut during the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge race at Virginia International Raceway on April 25, 2010.

After its run with the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge, this unique and highly-collectible Pace Car will make special appearances at the Hot Rod Power Tour, at numerous Larry H. Miller dealerships across the country and even at SEMA, before being auctioned for charity in January 2011. Proceeds of the auction will benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, formed to support research towards the diagnosis, treatment and development of a cure for pediatric cancer, and to provide support and hope to children and families undergoing treatment, as well as those who have lost children due to cancer. Through Hatch's house of hope, the Austin Hatcher Foundation provides a landmark group of educational, emotional and social skills development programs essential to help cancer stricken children and their families succeed within their community.

Additionally, the 2010 Hurst pace car's paint scheme and likeness will be used to create promotional items sold by the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Series at various race events and online, including a run of limited edition replica skins for their Miller Cup Pinewood Car kits. As one of several ongoing initiatives to support the Austin Hatcher Foundation, Mustang Challenge has integrated a fund-raising Miller Cup Pinewood Derby car race into the season-ending championship banquet at Miller Motorsports Park.

Larry H. Miller Dealership Group has confirmed that it will partner with Hurst Performance to donate the vehicle for this project. Other partners of the project include Whelen Engineering, Ford Racing, BFGoodrich Tires. Motorsports artist and Roger Warrick will create original art for promotional items.

"Hurst has a history of creating unique, high-quality, emotionally-charged muscle cars and the 2010 Hurst Ford Racing Mustang Challenge pace car is no different," said Nate Shelton, Chairman of Hurst Performance Vehicles. "We are so proud to have yet another opportunity to set the pace for others to follow and give something back to a deserving organization."

The stunning Hurst Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Pace Car comes equipped with 20" BFGoodrich g-Force™ T/A®KDW tires for maximum performance and attitude, 20" Hurst polished, forged aluminum wheels and a Hurst Competition/Plus shifter with a black T-handle.

The engine pounds out 550-horsepower, or nearly 200-horsepower more than the FR500S race Mustangs, and 542 lb.-ft of torque, courtesy of the Ford Racing polished supercharger, Ford Racing FR500S stainless-steel cat-back exhaust and K&N filter. With its race bred Ford Racing suspension, this car is sure to keep people straining just to see it zoom by. And to stop all this power, the car is equipped with an upgraded braking system featuring 14" rotors and 4-piston calipers, also from Ford Racing.

"The Austin Hatcher Foundation is proud to be partnering with Hurst Performance, the Larry H. Miller Dealership Group, Whelen Engineering, BFGoodrich Tires, Ford Racing and the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Series to sponsor the 2010 Hurst Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Pace Car," said Jim Osborn MD, Chairman of the Austin Hatcher Foundation. "The Foundation's focus is on empowering families faced with pediatric cancer to thrive, and we hope to bring excitement to these families through Hurst's history of unique muscle cars."

Other signature Hurst details include a traditional Hurst black on gold paint scheme, a Hurst leather interior with contrast top-stitching and embroidered logos, Hurst-logoed floor mats and a Hurst AIR-SPEED rear deck spoiler.

Motor Trend tests 2011 Ford Mustang GT, 12.8 1/4!

We've already seen the new 2011 Ford Mustang GT use it's 412 horsepower 5.0 V8 to outgun the Chevrolet Camaro SS and Dodge Challenger. Now we see what it is capable of, thanks to Motor Trend.

The Grabber Blue pony that MT tests in this video puts out a better than advertised 435 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque on the dyno, then obliterates the quarter mile with a smoking 12.8 second time at 110 mph. It also runs to 60mph in 4.3 seconds, which is only a couple of tenths slower than the Shelby GT500.

Certainly this is very impressive, and gives the Mustang the current pony car crown. But how Chevrolet and Dodge respond (and they most certainly will) is sure to change the muscle car scene in coming model years.

Video: Lingenfelter Camaro uses it's 855 horsepower to run 10.36 second quarter

At this year's largest gathering of new generation Camaros, Camaro5 fest, there were many sights to be seen. One such sight was a particular high powered Camaro brought out by Lingenfelter Performance Engineering for some drag racing.

The Camaro they brought pumps out an impressive 855 horsepower thanks to a supercharger, upgraded cam, ported heads, forged pistons, and some other goodies hooked up to a six speed manual transmission.

The Lingenfelter Camaro posted a nice 10.36 second best quarter mile run at a stout 136.5 mph. In the video above, the car runs a 10.41 @ 139.9 mph.

Camaro5 event draws largest gathering of new Camaros yet

Photobucket

If you're like most people, you have probrably seen a couple of new Camaros around. Sure, we've seen one here and there, but not exactly what one would consider a group. If you were in Valdosta, GA last weekend you would have seen more than just a few.

Camaro5 sponsored the get-together, which brought out 1,000 fans and 500 of the cars. Chevrolet even made an appearance, bringing along folks instrumental in bringing the car back to life - Al Oppenheiser, Peter Kosak, John Fitzpatrick and Cheryl Pilcher.

The event featured many cool events and features. A 2011 Camaro VIN #002 showed up, there was a three mile long parade through town, drag racing, autocross, and a car show at South Georgia Motorsports Park.

2010-04-20

More than 500 2010 Camaros descended on Valdosta, Ga. for the first Camaro5Fest. The event, hosted by Camaro5.com, is believed to have been the largest-ever gathering of fifth-generation Camaro owners. More than 1,000 people attended the event, driving their 2010 Camaros from across the U.S. and Canada to Valdosta on Friday, April 16.

Several members of the Camaro team attended, including Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser, Vehicle Line Director Peter Kosak, Camaro Marketing Manager John Fitzpatrick, and Camaro Product Manager Cheryl Pilcher. Team Camaro drove from Detroit to Georgia in two Camaro Transformers Special Editions, two Camaro Synergy Special Editions, a development Camaro, and VIN 002 of a 2011 Camaro.

Camaro5Fest kicked off with a cruise through the streets of Valdosta, led by Oppenheiser. Residents lined the streets, cheering as a line of Camaros more than three miles long passed by under police escort. The following day, Camaro fans traveled to South Georgia Motorsports Park for a car show, drag races and autocross competitions. The track events ended with Camaro owners getting the rare chance to drive their cars on the 1/2-mile oval track.

"It was an incredible opportunity to see the passion and enthusiasm owners have for the new Camaro," says Fitzpatrick. "This was such an exciting event that I would not be surprised to see more than 1,000 cars at next year's Camaro5Fest."

Ron Fellows rings out a Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

The Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport has been out for a little while now, and though it isn't the fastest or quickest Corvette in the stable it is a track hero in it's own right. This ZR-1 lite, if you will, is plenty capable and tossable at the track.

Ron Fellows, multiple ALMS champion and Le Mans, Sebring and Daytona winner is a good candidate to show us how good said Grand Sport really is at the track. And that is exactly who is piloting the car in this video. Check it out for some nice tire killing action.

Press Release

Corona, California. (April 16, 2010) On the day before the 46th anniversary of the debut of the Ford Mustang, which was launched on April 17, 1964, Steve Saleen, the man whose name has become synonymous with high performance Mustangs, launched his most eagerly awaited SMS Signature Series cars, the 2011 SMS 302 Mustang.

SMS Supercars President and CEO Steve Saleen says: "Many automotive enthusiasts have embraced our SMS 570 Challenger, but I know our core fans have been waiting for the first Mustang to come from the new company, SMS Supercars. I am thrilled to be able to end the suspense today. With the new 5.0L 2011 Mustang arriving at dealerships shortly, it was appropriate for us to act swiftly and present our SMS 302 Mustang based on this early model year change. We know the 302 name will excite any Mustang fan as well".

After the successful launch of the 2010 SMS 570 Challenger in the Spring of 2009, the 2011 SMS 302 Mustang represents the second in the trio of SMS American Supercars, which will be followed by the introduction of the 2011 SMS 620 Camaro later this year. At first, two SMS 302 versions will be offered, the SMS 302 4V with a normally aspirated 5.0L engine, followed by the SMS 302 SC, using the patented SMS 296 Supercharger.

Continues Steve: "Our line of SMS Mustangs will be the only Mustangs authorized to bear my name, to use the benefit of my heritage and to incorporate performance innovations derived from my over thirty years of racing and manufacturing experience. With the extensive design, development, manufacturing, certification and warranty coverage that we put into each vehicle, the government agencies all recognize SMS as the manufacturer of record for these cars".

Power

The SMS 302 4V utilizes the all-new normally aspirated twin overhead cam 5.0L V8 engine with over 440 hp and 400 ft-lb of torque. This is accomplished with an all-new 4-valve head design, a high flow exhaust system, an optimized pulley drive system, premium fuel calibration and performance filtration.

The SMS 302SC will pump out over 535 hp and 450 ft-lb of torque, thanks to the use of the SMS patent pending 296 Supercharger System with Asymmetric Multi-Lobe Screws, SMS Six-PackTM Intercooler System and SMS patent pending Duo-Path Induction. Transmission options for both are a 6-speed Automatic or a 6-Speed TR3650 Manual.

Performance

The 2011 SMS 302 4V will accelerate from 0-60 in under 4.5 seconds and pass the quarter mile in 13.5 seconds at a speed of 116 mph. The SMS 302SC numbers are even more impressive with a 4.3 second 0-60 and a quarter mile in 12.1 seconds at 119 mph.

Suspension

Both SMS 302 models come standard with the new and unique SMS S4 High Performance Suspension, comprising of S4 Specific Rate Front and Rear Springs, S4 Front Struts, S4 Rear Shocks, S4 Front and Rear Sway Bars with High Durometer Pivot Bushings and the all-new SMS unique S4 Watts Link rear suspension.

Both models utilize Pirelli PZero High Performance 275/35ZR 20 tires on 20" x 9" 5-spoke alloy wheels at the front and 275/40ZR 20 tires on 20" x 10" 5-spoke alloy wheels at the rear. The brakes with ABS Cross Drilled Rotors, Powder Coated Calipers and High Performance Racing pads deliver impressive stopping power to match the jaw-dropping acceleration.

Design

The SMS 302 has a striking design that separates it from any other vehicle in the market. Chief Creative Officer of SMS, Phil Frank notes, "The SMS 302 is a dramatic, timeless and iconic visual statement that confidently leads the pack, continuing the evolution of the image of the SMS brand." The sculpted front fascia utilizes a high volume lower radiator intake with brake ducts and an integrated front splitter with ducting for supercharged models. The striking new hood differentiates the car with its chrome trimmed heat extraction grilles. Available for either model as an option is the patented SMS Red ButterflyTM Center Ram Air Induction which debuted in 2008 on the SMS 25th Anniversary Mustang Concept. Notes Steve, "When those butterflies crack open under throttle, people stop and stare."

The bold side skirts echo the new Mustang's upper spear shape in the fenders while flowing seamlessly into the deep sculpting of the vented rear fascia. The high downforce rear diffuser includes a rear Formula One-style rain light in reference to Steve's racing pedigree. The most dramatic element of the SMS 302 is the transformation of the rear of the car through the integration of the rear fascia, rear fender caps and the trunk lid spoiler; which creates a longer silhouette and its exotic car good looks and makes the SMS 302 unmistakably a Steve Saleen product.

Interior

The interior with all-new Alcantara and leather SMS performance seats with the patented Signature Series chevron stripes, two-tone leather chevron door inserts, a leather-wrapped billet aluminum shift knob and leather wrapped steering wheel set the SMS 302 apart from lesser offerings. Instrumentation features a 200 mph gauge cluster and a supercharger gauge pod with boost and charge air temperature gauges for the SMS 302 SC. Standard features include a color keyed center console, a powerful Shaker 500 Stereo with SYNC® and a 276 Watt amplifier, aluminum SMS door sill plates and embroidered model designated floor mats to give the interior its finishing touch.

Tailor Made Options

SMS offers it's discerning customers a wide range of SMS Tailor Made options, including a dozen unique show car paint colors such as Burnout Black, Tire Smoke White, Sour Grape Green, Plum Insane, Pineapple Express Yellow and Maliblue to name a few. Customers can further personalize their car's interior in matching colors for the seat Signature Series chevrons and stitching if so desired.

Authenticity

Through the years, Steve's cars have become collector's items and many have held or even gained value due to their exclusivity and authenticity. After passing the extensive quality control and dynamic driving test, each SMS 302 is personally signed by Steve and then receives its matching serialized SMS VIN on the engine bay plaque, dash plaque and front bumper for authentication.

SMS 351X

While the SMS 302SC can win a fight with almost anything on the road, another legendary moniker is making its way back onto the road. Later this year, SMS Supercars will add the SMS 351X model. Says Steve: "with even more horsepower than the SMS 302SC, this supercharged beast will be the pinnacle performer of any production Mustang. More information on the SMS 351X will be released in the next few months".

2010 SMS 460 and 460X

SMS is in the process of completing the production run of 25 Limited Edition SMS 460 and 460X Mustangs based on the 2010 model year. These unique collector's items are powered by a supercharged 4.6L V8 engine. All of them are sold.

Report: no Ford Mustang EcoBoost....for now

Photobucket

With all the hoopla surrounding Ford's line of EcoBoost engines, improving fuel economy across the model range, and the 2011 Mustang, wouldn't it make sense if all of these elements were combined to produce a turbocharged EcoBoost Mustang?

Sensible, yes. Heck, we could even think of a retro name to give it, to go along with the rebirth of the 5.0 - SVO. But all those grand thoughts of nostalgia and having one's proverbial cake and eating it can just go away for now.

Motor Authority is reporting that we will not see an EcoBoost Mustang, at least not right now. Ford will not deny nor confirm that one is in the works now or for the future. We suppose a four banger Mustang just isn't really needed or wanted right now, but boy would it be cool.

A convertible is the final missing piece for the Camaro to be able to match it's competitor, the Mustang, model for model. The ragtop Camaro is slated to go into production at the Oshawa assembly plant in the first quarter of 2011.

Ford to attempt 1,000 lap challenge at Bristol Motor Speedway

With all of the hoopla surrounding the new V6 and 5.0L Ford Mustangs, here's another PR stunt aimed at proving a point and selling some more metal. On June 23rd, Ford will be taking a V6 Mustang to Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee to try and run 1,000 laps on a single tank of gas.

That works out to about 500 miles on a tank of gas. Interested parties can check out www.Mustang1000LapChallenge.com and guess how many laps the car will run before it runs out of gas. Of those who guess correctly, Ford will draw the name of one lucky person who will win a 2011 Mustang V6.

FORD SET TO TAKE 1,000-LAP CHALLENGE AROUND BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY ON ONE TANK OF GAS IN 2011 V6 MUSTANG

DEARBORN, Mich., March 21, 2010 – Since first coming off the assembly line 45 years ago, Mustang has always been known for its sheer power and speed. Now you can add another element to that reputation – best-in-class fuel economy.

One year after the Ford Fusion Hybrid, America's most fuel-efficient mid-sized sedan, successfully eclipsed 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas, Ford will put its new 2011 Mustang V-6 on a similar quest as it attempts to run 1,000 laps on a single tank of gas at Bristol Motor Speedway on June 23, and they're inviting consumers to be involved.

A team of Ford engineers and celebrities will attempt to prove Mustang's ranking as the most fuel-efficient pony car to date by circling the half-mile NASCAR bullring at least 1,000 times – more than 500 miles – and highlight the 3.7L V-6 model's best-in-class 31 mpg.

Fans can be involved in the Mustang 1,000-Lap Challenge by entering a national sweepstakes in which they will guess the total number of complete laps that Mustang will complete during the Challenge. Ford has designed a specific website for fans, who can register their guess at www.Mustang1000LapChallenge.com between March 21 and June 23, 2010.

The grand prize winner will be randomly selected from all those who correctly guess the number of laps completed during the Challenge and will take home a 2011 Mustang V-6 coupe.

"We all know how much fun it is to drive Mustang, but in today's market it's also about fuel economy," said Jamie Allison, director, Ford North America Motorsports. "By going 1,000 laps or more on one of NASCAR's most popular tracks, we expect to show that when it comes to Mustang, you can be mean and green."

The Mustang 1,000-Lap Challenge will begin the morning of Wednesday, June 23 with a team of Ford test drivers continuously circling the track billed as "the world's fastest half-mile" until the vehicle runs out of fuel with a goal of surpassing 1,000-lap mark.

"To go at least 1,000 laps at Bristol means we'll be going twice as far as the NASCAR drivers do during their races, and we'll be doing it without a pit stop," said Fritz Wilke, Mustang Brand Manager.

The V-6 Mustang will be no stranger to Bristol by then, having been selected to serve as pace car for this weekend's Food City 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event.

This event is a follow-up to last year's challenge in which Ford NASCAR driver Carl Edwards participated in driving the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid a total of 1,445 miles (an average of 81.5 mpg) on a single tank of gas around Washington, D.C.

2011 Chevrolet Camaro now has 312hp V6, ends Mustang's one day reign

Photobucket

Yesterday, we reported that the 2011 Ford Mustang V6 toppled the Camaro V6 in a head to head comparison. But one aspect of that victory was short lived, as today Chevrolet announced that it's V6 in the 2011 Camaro will be rated at 312hp, which is 7hp more than the Mustang.

The kicker here is that nothing has been done to extract this extra power. Turns out, the V6 was underrated all along, and only the rating has been altered. This of course means that although the Camaro will have horsepower bragging rights, the Mustang will still smoke it in the real world.

Other changes for 2011 are the availability of Synergy Green in any trim level, and the heads up display is will be standard equipment on 2LT and 2SS models.

Press Release

Chevrolet supports Camaro's consumer momentum with exciting updates for 2011

312 horsepower for V6, expanded availability of Synergy color and heads-up display new for 2011

The 2010 model year proved to be a very successful and exciting year for the segment-leading Chevrolet Camaro. For the 2011 model year, Chevrolet looks to expand the car's popularity among consumers with the introduction of additional features.

"We are pleased with Camaro's success in the market during its first year of production," said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President, Chevrolet Marketing. "The 2010 model year has been a banner year for us, and we plan to build on this momentum."

Horsepower increase for V6 engine

The 2011 Camaro V-6 engine completed SAE certification testing and is now officially rated at 312 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 278 lb-ft of torque at 5100 rpm. This rating is eight horsepower higher than the previous year and also marks an increase in torque from the 2010 rating of 273 lb-ft.

"The 304 horsepower in the 2010 Camaro was actually a conservative rating on our end," said Tom Sutter, GM V-6 chief engineer. "But we knew already that this award-winning engine produced at least the amount of power we stated, but now we've gone the extra step in certifying the engine for this application and have verified an additional 8 horsepower."

The 3.6-liter V-6 with variable valve timing (VVT) and direct injection employs four independent cam phasers to change the timing of valve operation as operating conditions such as rpm and engine load vary. The result is linear delivery of torque, with near-peak levels over a broad rpm range, and high specific output (maximum horsepower per liter of displacement) supporting overall engine response and drivability. When combined, direct-injection and VVT enable an unmatched combination of power, efficiency and low-emissions in gasoline V-6 engines.

SAE certification is a voluntary power and torque certification procedure developed by the SAE Engine Test Code committee. This procedure (J2723) ensures fair, accurate ratings for horsepower and torque by allowing manufacturers to certify their engines through third-party witness testing. Chevrolet was the vehicle brand to begin using the procedure.

Synergy color to be made available across the lineup

Earlier this year, Chevrolet introduced the Camaro Synergy Special Edition which is based off the concept displayed at the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas. The Synergy Special Edition is limited to a 1LT model, but the Synergy Green exterior color will be made available on all trim levels for a limited run during the 2011 model year.

"When we looked at the overwhelmingly positive reaction we received from SEMA attendees and consumers on Synergy Green, making the color available across the board was pretty much a no-brainer," said John Fitzpatrick, Camaro Marketing Manager.

Customers will be able to order this color for a manufacturer suggested retail price of $325.

Head-Up Display

Already available on the Chevrolet Corvette, the 2011 Camaro will become the second Chevrolet vehicle to offer the popular Head-Up Display.

Camaro's Head-Up Display will include:

* Vehicle speed
* Tachometer
* Compass
* Outside air temperature
* Manual Paddle Shift Gear Indicator (if equipped)
* OnStar Turn-by-Turn
* Audio functions
* Phone information
* Selected gear
* Turn signal indicators
* High-beam indicator signal
* Vehicle messages

"Head-Up Display has been a very frequent customer request" said Cheryl Pilcher, Camaro Product Manager. "People familiar with the HUD system simply love it. It truly enables drivers to keep their eyes on the road."

Production of the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro begins on June 7, 2010.

Inside line pits 2011 Ford Mustang and Camaro V6 in first comparo

Photobucket

Right on the heels of the very first comparison test between the 2011 Ford Mustang GT and the Camaro SS comes this, the first between the base V6 models thanks to Inside Line. And while it may not have all the glitz and glamour of a V8 showdown, rest assured you will see more of these models in the real world of rental cars and high school kids.

The ultra heavy Camaro (3,790 pounds!) ran a respectable 14.3 second quarter mile, 6.1 seconds 0-60, and pulled a .83g on the skidpad. 60-0 braking took 111.78 feet. All of which are pretty good numbers.

But then along came the Mustang with its lighter 3,508 pound mass. It ran a 13.9 second quarter mile (!!!), took 5.6 seconds to get to 60, and pulled a .91g on the skidpad. 60-0 took a mere 103 feet.

So the Mustang handily beats the Camaro yet again. But rest assured that Chevrolet will not take this laying down. Word is that they are already hard at work making some changes, which we may see sooner than later.

2011 Ford Mustang wins first comparison test with Camaro, Challenger

Photobucket

The pony car wars have been fully rejuvenated, despite many obstacles such as high gas prices and a declining economy. The Mustang has been going strong for many years, while the Camaro and Challenger are reborn. Both have surpassed the Mustang in power and straight numbers.

When we found out that Ford was coming back strong for 2011 with the rejuvenated 5.0L moniker backed up by a serious boost in power, up to 412 from a paltry 315. Naturally, we expected there to be many comparison tests to follow.

The first comes to us thanks to Motor Trend. And as expected, the new Mustang claimed victory against a Camaro SS and Challenger SRT-8. Not surprisingly, thanks to it's better power to weight ratio. But the Mustang also claimed victory in quality and fit and finish. Head on over to MT to see the full comparo.

Hennessey V700 Cadillac CTS-V on the dyno

The Cadillac CTS-V was built to be a world beating, world class luxury sedan. And it meets those standards rather handily. But as always, more is better, and more is certainly the case with the Hennessey tuned V700.

More than 700 horsepower at the motor is certainly a healthy power boost over the stocker's numbers. As you can see here in this dyno video, the car pulls 636hp and 656 lb-ft of torque at the wheels, enough to blow past almost any BMW or Mercedes in your path, and perhaps a Corvette or two.

Video: 2011 Ford Mustang GT on the dyno

The 2011 Ford Mustang not only brings back the legendary 5.0 moniker, it brings the Mustang back into the heated pony car power race. Rated at 412 hp, there is not doubt the new motor is stout. But that won't and did not stop Inside Line from putting one on the dyno to see how accurate that number is.

After a few pulls, the car managed 395 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. This translates to a better than advertised 446 hp at the crank! Producing that kind of number makes one wonder why Ford would rate the car at 412 hp, slotting it below the Camaro SS. Regardless of the reason, check out the video to witness the new 5.0 in action.
