Mr. Norm builds a new L'il Red Express

In the murk that was the late 70's, there was very little performance to be found. Most "muscle cars" still had V8's, but sadly they were choked with smog equipment and putting out sad levels of horsepower. Car manufacturers left the flashy decals on but took away all the fun in the name of expensive gas and emissions requirements.

One vehicle that managed to emerge through this mess and make a statement was the Dodge L'il Red Express, which was built in 1978 and 1979. The little truck that could snickered in the face of regulations with it's twin smoke stacks sticking up in the sky and ripping off 14.7 second quarter mile times with it's 360 V8. That was good enough to make it the quickest vehicle produced in 1978, and is still pretty quick by today's standards.

Mr. Norm is bringing back the icon of a dark era by producing his own tribute to the L'il Red Express in his own shop, utilizing the new Dodge Ram. The only downside is that in order to keep the cost down, you won't see huge exhaust stacks on the side of the new Express. Turns out fitting a stepside bed to a new Ram would be too costly and pointless. If you want to see a comparison between old and new, check it out here.

Geiger GTS, the German version of a Corvette ZR1

German tuner Geiger has produced it's own version of the venerable Corvette ZR1, dubbed the Geiger GTS. A few tweaks to the powertrain net an additional 63hp, bringing the grand total up to 710, while torque is up to 677 lb-ft.

OZ Racing wheels replace the originals, 19 x 10 in the front and 20 x 12 in the rear, and they are shod in 285/30ZR19 and 345/25ZR20 Michelins respectively.

The stock Corvette ZR1 nose and tail have been swapped out for some Geiger custom parts, and aggressive side sill extensions have been added. The custom paint is color shifting pearl white with black accents.

PRESS RELEASE

Geiger GTS: Extreme sportsman with retro elements

The announcement was clear: "It is very important for Corvette, to offer the strongest, most high performance and best sports car in terms of handling in the USA." With these words the former chairman of General Motors Rick Wagoner set his engineers a clear goal around two years ago, which also included trumping the Dodge Viper SRT10, which was shown at the Detroit Car Show shortly before, in all regards.

The technicians got to work and so the next year the persons responsible were able to proudly unveil the quickest and highest performance series vehicle ever produced by General Motors: the Corvette ZR1.

Under the sheer endlessly long bonnet of the ZR1 lurks a newly developed LS9 6.2 litre small block V8 with compressor supercharging. Pressurised by the Eaton R2300 compressor with up to 0.72 bar, this primitive engine gets up to 647 HP and a maximum torque of 823 Nm.

Further technical highlights of the extreme Corvette are its high performance breaking system with their 394 and 381 mm diameter carbon ceramic discs, as well as the electronically controlled suspension "Magnetic Selective Ride Control" with track level suspension mounting. Bonnet, roof, sill, rear wing and front spoiler are made of super light, but at the same time high strength carbon.

GeigerCars.de from Munich, which has specialised in the import and refinement of US cars for years, has not only brought this extreme sportsman from the United States to Germany, it has also optionally subjected it to diverse tuning measures at the same time – the first example of the Corvette ZR1 "Geiger GTS" will be presented to the world public at the 63rd International Automobile Exhibition at Frankfurt am Main from 17th to 27th September.

The datasheet for the Corvette ZR1 "Geiger GTS" shows 710 HP maximum performance with 6,600 rotations per minute and the car produces gigantic 918 Nm on the crankshaft at only 4,200 revs. Set up in this way the ZR1 storms up to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds, and at the same time nails the back of the occupants' head to the head rest of the Geiger carbon sport seats. The propulsion only ends at a speed of 342 kilometres per hour.

At these values the hardest work is done by the 10 x 19 and 12 x 20 inch high performance tyres mounted on light metal rims with the dimensions 285/30ZR19 at the front and 345/25ZR20 at the rear tyres.

Of course GeigerCars extensively modified the look of the Corvette, lending it a styling, which is reminiscent of the large Gran Turismos of the 60's and 70's. The front and back were extensively modified; a wide air vent dominates the nose, while a massive diffuser attracts attention at the back. Both the fog and rear lights are based on modern LED semi conductive technology. The three layer mother of pearl varnish of the Corvette ZRI "Geiger GTS" with changing colour play is also a real eye catcher.

AFVTech builds a 600hp 1933 Ford, powered by CNG

AFVTech is preparing a 1933 Ford with 600hp for the upcoming show circuit. So what, you ask, is so special about that? Well the car is going to be shown at the Alternative Fuels and Vehicles Expo, so that may give you a hint.

AFVTech is using what President Kevin Fern calls the "Natural Drive dedicated EPA-certified CNG retrofit systems" for 600 clean-burning horsepower. The conversion uses a modified General Motors LS7 seven-liter V8 engine (as used in the Chevrolet Corvette Z06), a six-speed transmission, drive-by-wire controls and ABS disc brakes.

The company also has other green efforts, including a hydrogen powered Ford Crown Victoria.

GM News: Next Corvette to have split window, Holden to be imported with police package?

With all the retro craze that's been infecting the automotive world in past years, it seems only inevitable that Chevrolet would bring back one of it's most iconic tidbits of styling: the split window.

Ed Welburn has reportedly told Inside Line that C7 'vette will indeed possess a split window, previously only seen on the 1963 model. What the next Corvette will not be, however, is the car featured in Transformers and it will not be mid engine.

In other future model news, GM appears to still be planning to bring the Holden Commodore to the states with a special police package. In spite of the Pontiac G8, along with all other Pontiacs being canned. GM chief Fritz Henderson has been quoted as saying: "We've been working on a package for police applications. I just think that's going to work. We're pretty optimistic about it and that product will be sourced in Australia."

While this still doesn't help out the many U.S. fans of Holden and the G8 a whole lot, it at least means that maybe in the next couple of years you will be able to buy a used one at your local police vehicle auction.

Jim Wanger and Big 3 Performance team up for restomod Pontiac GTO

Jim Wangers is a name familiar to those that worship the GTO. He was Pontiac's chief marketing manager when the GTO was first released in 1964. And now his name and endorsement are behind a new restomod based on the 1969 Pontiac GTO.

Appearance wise, changes are minor as they should be with such iconic styling. Wider hood scoops and a Trans-Am style ducktail spoiler round it out. Inside, a custom dash and audio system join embroidered Recaro seats and GPS navigation. Holding it all up is a custom chassis fitted with Corvette parts and a Ford 9 inch rear.

The good stuff is naturally under the hood. 505 cubic inches of Pontiac V8 churn out an estimated 700 horsepower and is backed up by a six speed sourced from the Dodge Viper. Cost of the build is expected to be around $130,000. Combining a mostly stock appearance with loads of modern power sounds like a recipe for success to us, at any price.

Iacocca Mustang to start at $89,950

The price of exclusivity, style, and power is pretty steep. But then again, if it wasn't everybody including your uncle Cletus would be driving Ferrari's.

Lee Iacocca's Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang is one of the hottest pony cars on the market, and now it's one of the most expensive as well. Pricing for each of the 45 cars will begin at $89,950.

You can add on options such as a supercharger, or bigger brakes. These additions will take the price over six figures, but if you can afford it then a ten or twenty thousand more won't matter.

In reality a rare, limited production car such as this selling for under six figures is a bargain. And the first one already sold at auction for $125,000, so act now if you want one!

PRESS RELEASE:

I Legacy, the team responsible for introducing the stunning Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang, in concert with Galpin Ford, announced today that pricing on the iconic, limited edition cars will start at $89,950.

Built by Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters, a company known for building some of the most awe-inspiring concept cars for numerous auto manufacturers for more than 28 years, the Iacocca Mustang is a breathtaking vehicle that utilizes the latest in Ford performance technology with a style and panache that screams Mustang fastback.

The car is an exceptional piece of modern day coach building, an art dating back to the 1930s and 40s, reaching a zenith with European sports cars of the 50s and 60s. It is a hand-built example of an art form that is all but lost today.

By blending old world craftsmanship, new world technology and uncompromising integrity, Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters provides superb expertise with every car. Each of the 45 limited edition Mustangs are custom-built by a team of talented artists, using composite construction Laminates, a reinforced material that is primarily used in aerospace design.

"The Iacocca Mustang embodies all the elements of a car that will be a future collectible," said Keith Martin, publisher of Sports Car Market magazine. "It is stunning in appearance, will be built in limited numbers and has top-flight performance. Further, given its true custom-built nature, it is being offered at a very reasonable price."

The hand-crafted vehicles, all painted in a specially-created Iacocca silver hue, are fabricated using only the finest tooling, with each part separately cured in an autoclave. As a result, every part of the Iacocca Mustang is extremely light, but very strong.

The Iacocca-designed hood crest is custom built by a distinguished jeweler and every emblem is hand-finished and polished. Front and rear wheels are cast aluminum and chrome plated for a sheen-like finish and the center caps are machined and also chrome plated.

While the exterior fastback design of the Iacocca Silver Mustang is compelling, the mechanical underpinnings are true American muscle. Two Ford Racing power options are offered for the normally-aspirated 4.6-liter Ford V8 300hp – *a Ford Racing 85 mm cold air kit with 320 horsepower or *an optional Ford Racing supercharger that delivers a head-snapping 400 horsepower. Both come with a factory Ford warranty. Drivers will harness the power through a quick-shifting 5-speed manual transmission.

Inside the Iacocca Silver Mustang, the interior is resplendent with luxurious touches that highlight the car's special heritage, including Iacocca Diamond Design leather seats with embroidery stitching, an Iacocca signature dash plaque with serial number, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with "I" badge and Iacocca-badged aluminum door sill plates.

The Iacocca Silver Edition Mustang is a collaborative effort by Lee Iacocca, designer Michael Leone, and Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters, the world-class coachbuilding and Design Company in Fountain Valley, Calif. Galpin Ford, the largest volume Ford dealer in the world, is the exclusive dealership to offer these Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustangs to the public.

2010 Hennessey Camaro makes it's first dyno run

Hennessey makes a living selling tuned, insanely powerful versions of America's best muscle cars. So we could assume that the Hennessey Camaro would be no exception to the rule. But just in case you ever doubted the tuner's ability to add considerable power to GM's reborn pony car, here is video proof of the car's first dyno run.

Camaro Z/28 to live after all, and with a supercharger?

The Camaro Z/28 has been on again and off again more than a hollywood romance. It seems that Chevrolet just can't let the dream die, especially with the Mustang Shelby GT500 running around as the superior pony car offering.

Inside Line is now reporting that GM Veep Ed Welburn says the Z/28 program is back in full effect and is headed for production. The car will sport a 6.2-liter LS-A from the Cadillac CTS-V that should be good for about 550 horsepower under it's hood bulge. Transmission choices will be either an automatic or a six speed manual.

If the rumor is true, the Z would hit dealer lots in roughly a year, just enough time to get all the kinks worked out.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro coming to Formula Drift

Drifting, for all it's Japanese roots, is a sport that seems to be created for American muscle. Sliding around corners and spinning tires relentlessly is something Mustangs, Chargers, and Camaros do with ease. So it makes a lot of sense that we will soon see the Camaro make it's debut in Formula Drift.

BR Racing is developing a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS that will sport a Cadillac CTS-V mill pumping out roughly 600hp at the wheels, or around 700hp at the motor.

Roush Stage 3 and 540RH Mustangs revealed

Do you like your Mustang with performance or fluff? The choice is yours with the brand new Roush Stage 3 and 540RH Mustangs. The Stage 3 is Roush's logical successor to the 427R. It gets a 540-horsepower upgrade complete with a second-generation R2300 supercharger, forged internals, high-flow fuel rails and injectors, upgraded fuel pump and a beefier clutch. The $59,945 price tag also gets you 18-inch wheels and tires, 14-inch brakes, a Roush suspension system, various interior enhancements and a Roush body kit.

The 540RH is the car you want if you just seek performance and no fluff. Somewhat of a sleeper package, the 540RH includes all the performance goodies of the Stage 3 but only includes the the rear spoiler, a short-throw shifter, and a subtle stripe package. Roush claims that they have already run the car at their local strip and ripped off an 11.8 second quarter mile. This Shelby GT500 beating performance can be yours for a lower price tag of $46,145.

PRESS RELEASE:

ROUSH® introduces a pair of new 2010 Mustang models, each with 540 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque ready to be unleashed by the touch of the throttle.

The 2010 ROUSH Stage 3™ Mustang will once again take its rightful place atop the hierarchy of Jack Roush's lineup. The vehicle comes fully-loaded with the ROUSH body components; resonator exhaust; four-piston front brakes with 14-inch rotors and painted rear calipers with slotted rotors; and the new upper billet grille which removes the fog lamps and streamlines the appearance of the new Mustang while improving cooling performance. Interior enhancements include ROUSH leather seats with an embroidered Jack Roush signature; four-piece performance pedals; ROUSH illuminated sill plates; short throw shifter with black or white ball; and a new interior Stage 3 badge with the car's serial number engraved.

The 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang will ride on 18-inch chrome wheels with high-performance Cooper RS3 tires; 20-inch chrome wheels with Cooper RS3 tires are one of the few options available on this model. The suspension package includes ROUSH front struts, rear shocks, front and rear springs, front and rear stabilizer bars and jounce bumpers.

"The ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang has traditionally been among the halo vehicles of our lineup and I'm really proud that it sits atop the pecking order once again," said Jack Roush. "This new iteration of the Stage 3 represents our highest horsepower and most sophisticated ROUSH Mustang yet, and is sure to resonate among our fans."

The suggested retail for the 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang is $59,945*. The 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang will have a limited production run of only 103 vehicles.

The second Mustang unveiled with the 540 horsepower powerplant is the new 2010 ROUSH 540RH™, a limited content, full powertrain vehicle. Also known as the Hammer®, this car comes armed with massive horsepower, a ROUSH rear decklid spoiler, and short throw shifter with a choice of white or black ball, the 540RH is a stoplight slayer.

Proving just how quick this car can be on the optional 18-inch Cooper RS3 tires, ROUSH engineers recorded an 11.8-second elapsed time at 121 mph during testing at Milan (Mich.) Dragway in early September.

"The new ROUSH 540RH is really intended to be a 'sleeper' car," Roush explained. "It will be purposely built with minimal content as it was designed for the buyer who wanted the ROUSH horsepower but with a blank canvas that can be customized into their own personal one-of-a-kind ride."

The 2010 ROUSH 540RH has a new suspension package which includes front and rear springs, front and rear stabilizer bars and jounce bumpers, and a subtle tone-on-tone striping package. All this comes with a suggested retail starting at $46,145* when built on a base Ford Mustang GT chassis.

Both the 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang and the 2010 ROUSH 540RH Mustang use the same engine that debuted in the 2009 ROUSH P-51B™ Mustang. In order to get this type of power from the Ford 4.6L, 3-valve engine, ROUSH technicians replace many of the internal components with stronger parts including forged aluminum pistons (with an increased dish to lower the compression ratio from 9.8 to 8.6), forged steel H-Beam connecting rods and a forged steel crankshaft. The fuel rails are changed, as are the fuel injectors and an upgraded fuel pump. ROUSH also upgrades the clutch and includes a custom-calibration for the ECM to manage the performance of the next-generation R2300 ROUSHcharger®.

As is standard with all new ROUSH Mustangs, both cars will come with the anti-wheel hop kit installed during the assembly process. This part (No. 401788) is an outstanding addition to any 2005-2010 Ford Mustang GT.

Both vehicles are covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and will be available with a manual transmission only. The 2010 ROUSH Stage 3 is expected to start production by the end of September; the 2010 ROUSH 540RH should start showing up on dealer lots in October. Hurst Camaro to be at SEMA, then auctioned off for charity

SEMA is right around the corner, so it's about time we start hearing about some of the many sweet rides that will be shown off during the annual spectacle. One of the cars that we will see is this one off 2010 Hurst Camaro, which will be auctioned off on eBay beginning two weeks before the show.

The original car was generously donated by GM, and proceeds from the auction will go to benefit SEMA's Memorial Scholarship Fund that supports students who want to pursue careers in the aftermarket industry.

This unique Camaro will feature a silver and black paint scheme similar to the Hurst Challenger. The car also comes with a Hurst AIR-SPEED decklid spoiler, 20-inch polished forged wheels wrapped with BFGoodrich tires, Eibach suspension components, Magnaflow exhaust system and exterior Hurst badges.

PRESS RELEASE:

Irvine, Calif. (September 17, 2009) – SEMA, in cooperation with General Motors and Hurst Performance Vehicles, announced today that it will auction the first pre-production HURST/Camaro prior to the 2009 SEMA Show. The proceeds are to benefit the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund, a program that fosters industry leadership by supporting the education of students pursuing careers in the automotive aftermarket.

The car will be auctioned on eBay Motors during the two weeks prior to the show.

"SEMA has a wonderful history of supporting our industry through scholarships made to deserving students," said Scooter Brothers, Chairman of the SEMA Scholarship Committee. "The SEMA Scholarship Committee is delighted that Hurst Performance, along with GM, is making this generous donation with this one-of-a-kind HURST/Camaro. We look forward to a very successful auction culminating at the SEMA Show this November."

"We are thrilled to be able to support the SEMA Scholarship Fund by contributing this very special Camaro," said Bob Kern, General Motors SEMA Relations Manager. "GM is very committed to growing this industry and we are certainly dedicated to be part of a program that helps enrich the lives of so many young, aspiring automotive scholars."

The very first HURST/Camaro is finished in Hurst's best bad-boy colors; brilliant black with honest-to-goodness real painted silver and red stripes. Hurst hardware could pass for art; especially the massive 20" polished forged aluminum HURST T-2 wheels, a Hurst Competition Plus short-throw shifter with a special red anodized HARD-DRIVE® billet pistol-grip shift handle and a Hurst AIR-SPEED® rear deck spoiler and real metal exterior badges. The Eibach suspension and Magnaflow stainless performance exhaust system deliver more attitude and performance to match the looks of this stellar performance machine. The interior has a personalized HURST/Camaro dash plaque and logo embroidered floor mats. Signatures from the Hurst Executive Team are under the trunk lid and documentation is provided to complete the car's provenance and guarantee that it is truly one-of-a-kind.

"This is hands-down the coolest Hurst Camaro ever...in fact, it's the first one!" said Hurst Performance CEO and 25 year SEMA Scholarship Committee member, Chris Phillips. "At Hurst Performance, we are committed making a difference with our cars and that includes helping young people get started in their careers in this industry. We are honored to join SEMA and GM in donating this car to this very worthy cause."

Joining Hurst Performance as Sponsors are many of the industry's most respected companies including Aria Design, BF Goodrich Tires, Magnaflow, K&N, Eibach, Acsco Products, Star West and CoverKing.

Watch for the unveiling of the new 2010 HURST/Camaro Performance Series at the 2009 SEMA Show in November.

HSV E Series 2 lineup, more proof that Australians have cooler cars than us

With the last of the Holden based Pontiac G8's rolling off of dealer lots, we Americans are no longer able to experience any semblance of what automotive joy Australians do when going to a dealer lot. And now to seemingly rub it in, Holden is announcing Series 2 of it's HSV E Series.

It's bad enough that Ford's awesome Falcon is only available to Aussies. Holden also offers up the The GTS, Maloo R8, ClubSport R8 and ClubSport R8 Tourer. No matter what flavor you like your Holden, they all come equipped with an LS3 V8 sporting at least 425hp, with the GTS making 435.

The spec lists on these cars is very impressive, and obviously makes it more depressing that we will more than likely never see anything like them on our shores. Check out the press release below for all the details on what we are missing out on.

Retro 2007 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 shows up on eBay

Back a couple of months ago at Mustang Week in Myrtle Beach, SC, I spotted amongst the hundreds of fox bodies and Roush's a car that made me do a double look. At first glance it appeared to be a nicely done late 60's Mustang, but something wasn't quite right.

After getting around the crowd to take a closer look, I noticed that it was in fact a 2007 Mustang with some interesting retro body work. Retrobuilt constructed this one off as a prototype to produce molds for fiberglass body kits.

And now the prototype is up for grabs on eBay. Current bids are around the $30,000 range, which is certainly a decent price range for a unique and (for now) one off ride.

2010 Shelby Super Snake Mustang takes the crown, and your lunch money

Carroll Shelby has been adding power and handling prowess to Ford's venerable Mustang for generations. In addition to helping out with the GT500, Shelby also lends a hand with the ultimate (for now) 2010 Mustang, the Shelby Super Snake.

The Super Snake doesn't try to play the part of sleeper with it's aggressive paint scheme and body work. Trying to hide it's true intentions is just pointless when you're behind the wheel of a machine sporting a 5.4L V8 pumping out 750hp and 710 lb-ft of torque.

To us, the Super Snake is the ultimate new Mustang not only in power but in looks. It's certainly got an attitude, but it's not overboard or in your face. A lot of tuner 'stangs look tacky, their fiberglass body parts seem like a mere afterthought tacked on to differentiate it from the many others.

For those lucky enough to drive or even own a Super Snake, we can envision many happy backroad adventures. Or just sitting in your climate controlled garage staring at it. Either way, the Shelby Super Snake satisfies in a way none of the other aftermarket Mustangs can - in every way.

Labor Day Flashback: The Making of Bullitt

Making of Bullitt

Bullitt was a man's car movie, the kind made without all those fancy CGI effects and fake computer wizardry. The chase scene, featuring Steve McQueen's 1968 Mustang going up against a black 1968 Charger R/T 440 Magnum, is still one of the best of all time.

And that very chase was real, with the cars topping 100 mph on the hilly streets of San Francisco. A groups of some of the best stunt drivers around teamed up to make one seriously epic scene.

Check out this ten minute video to see how Bullitt was made, and another bonus video showing the chase scene in it's entirety.

Super rare 1969 DeTomaso Mangusta shows up on eBay

American muscle and Italian design are no stranger to each other, both in the past and the present. And back in 1969, a lucky few could have their cake and eat it too in the form of the DeTomaso Mangusta.

De Tomaso was founded by an Argentinean based in Modena, and they created the Mangusta (Italian for "mongoose") which harbored a Ford V8 under the hood. From 1967through 1971, 400 Mangustas rolled out of the De Tomaso factory with 289s or 302s installed, out of which fewer than 200 are believed to still be around.

This particular Mangusta packs a 302 fitted with race-spec cylinder heads and intake manifold sourced from Dan Gurney's legendary Eagle racer. It once belonged to cosmetics heir and noted car collector Jack Nethercutt before passing into the hands of Vector founder Gerard Wiegert.

Video: New Trans Am makes an entrance in Dayton

Of all the models that Pontiac sold over the years, the Firebird was arguably the most loved. Though it was little more than a Camaro with different badges and bumpers, many liked the distinct look.

It's no surprise then that the Firebird is destined to live on even though Pontiac is now dead. Kevin Morgan's Phoenix TA is going to keep doing what GM wouldn't do, and that's make the car available for the buying public.

Here at the 25th Anniversary Trans Am Nationals in Dayton, Ohio, the very first "new" Firebird was driven off a trailer for hundreds of screaming fans. The car is fittingly painted up in a classic gold and black scheme.

Video: 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet test and tune at the dragstrip

2010 Cobra Jet

We already knew that Ford would be continuing the Cobra Jet, a drag ready ride from the factory, for the 2010 model year. And now the new CJ has already been out for a little testing recently at Milan Dragway in Michigan.

There are some differences, besides the styling, between the '09 and '10 models. Under the hood is a massive 3.4 liter Whipple supercharger that forces air into the 5.4L V8, more so than the previous model's FRPP blower. The interior gets a Liberty clutchless V-Gate style shifter and various gauges, buttons and toggles that give it a nice racey look.

Full details on the car will be available when it makes it's debut at SEMA in November. Until then, check out the Cobra Jet making a 1/4 mile pass in the video.

"Big Daddy" Don Garlits to race again in new Dodge Challenger Drag Pak

Don Garlits is a drag racing legend who was an innovator during his long career. Garlits, who specialized in Top Fuel, was the first drag racer to produce such a machine with a rear-engine layout following an accident that cost him part of his foot. Later, he was among the first to be successful with a streamlined Top Fuel car.

Garlits is now 77 years old and it has been 6 years since his last race. And Big Daddy will be hitting the track again in Indianapolis behind the wheel of a new Dodge Challenger Drag Pak. The car that Garlits is driving is the first production Challenger Drag Pak to roll off the line after the special performance model debuted last year at the Performance Racing Industry show. There's no word on whether Garlits will continue competing after this weekend's U.S. Nationals, but you can't deny that the urge never dies.

PRESS RELEASE:

'Big Daddy' Don Garlits to Return to NHRA Drag Racing in a Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar® at Mac Tools U.S. Nationals

Garlits will make his first appearance in organized drag racing in six years

Center Line, Mich., Aug 31, 2009 - "Big Daddy" Don Garlits is making a comeback to NHRA competition for the first time since 2003, driving his Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar® into the heat of NHRA Stock eliminations at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend. His historic first run in the Drag Pak will be on Wednesday, Sept. 2, in A/Stock Automatic qualifying at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. The full U.S. Nationals event is scheduled to begin Sept. 2 with final eliminations on Monday, Sept. 7.

Garlits hung up his helmet after Top Fuel qualifying at the U.S. Nationals exactly six years ago in 2003. He last ran a stock class car in 1963 when he competed in a 1963 Dodge Max Wedge drag package car carrying "Garlits Dodge" graphics. His new Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar has the same lettering emblazoned on its sides, along with the same Mopar graphics from his historic run last year alongside "Miss Mighty Mopar" Judy Lilly in Drag Pak prototypes at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals.

"I like my Dodge Challenger Drag Pak much better than a dragster," said Garlits, referring to the current way Top Fuel dragsters are campaigned. "It takes 25 people to get a dragster to the line these days. All I have to do with the Dodge Challenger is turn the key and take it there. When the light turns green I have a ten-second ride-which is almost three times what I used to get-and I even have time to look at the tach and shift gears."

"Big Daddy's" 2009 Dodge Challenger is the first Drag Pak by Mopar ever made. He took delivery at the Performance Racing Industry show in December 2008, receiving the keys along with a certificate of authenticity from Mopar. Garlits put the Drag Pak by Mopar through test and exhibition runs at the World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova Dragway Park in Cordova, Ill., last weekend.

Garlits retired for the first time in 1987, but returned for one race at Atlanta in 1992 and made a 300-mph run at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis in 2001. He then ran a limited schedule of four NHRA National events each year in 2002 and 2003 before he stepped out of Top Fuel at the request of his wife, Pat. "I didn't want to come home and find my clothes all over the front yard," he said at the time he acquired his new Dodge Challenger, explaining that he had the home-front green light to run a doorslammer in competition, referring to his Drag Pak vehicle.

Garlits statistics

• 17 World Championship Titles and 144 National event wins
• Voted #1 Drag Racer for the past 50 years by the NHRA in 2001
• Won the prestigious U.S. Nationals eight times
• Car Craft Magazine Top Fuel Driver of the Year: 1969-70, 1972-73, 1975-78 & 1986
• Car Craft Magazine "Man of the Year": 1969, 1971-73
• American Hot Rod Association "Fuel Driver of the Year": 1971-74

The Mopar Brand: Authentic Motor Parts and Accessories for Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Mopar-a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts-was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It also was widely used as a moniker for the CMPC.

The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s-the muscle car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth "package cars" equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of "special parts" for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

In addition to its proud muscle-car heritage, Mopar established a solid reputation as a one-stop shop for proven, quality-tested, reliable and original parts. Just this year, in 2009, Mopar has introduced more than 200 new parts and accessories.

"Mopar parts are unique in that they are engineered by the same team that creates all of our factory-authorized vehicle specifications for Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge vehicles," said Pietro Gorlier, President & CEO, Mopar Service, Parts & Customer Care, Chrysler Group LLC. "At Mopar, we offer more than 280,000 parts and accessories for customers who want to customize and refresh their rides."

Today, Mopar is responsible for the distribution of authentic Mopar replacement parts, components and accessories for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles sold in more than 90 countries. To assure quality, reliability and durability, all Mopar parts and accessories are designed in strict adherence to Chrysler engineering standards.

2011 Ford Mustang details leaked on internet forum?

People believe anything they read on the internet these days. If it's written somewhere it must be true, right? Well I for one hope that the following information is indeed correct, because it sounds a lot like what Mustang fans have been hoping for.

The "leaked" details come to us courtesy of The Mustang Source via a member who goes by the name TheInsider (coincidence?). He tells us that the 2011 Mustang's 3.7-liter V6 will be rated at 315 horsepower. The 2011 GT will reportedly see a bump to an even 400 horsepower thanks to it's new Coyote 5.0 V8.

Obviously, this has created quite a stir on The Mustang Source, so make sure you head over and read the comments.
