Chevrolet to offer Bumblebee Camaro, but no Indy 500 Pace Car?

It's just a sign of the times. The four previous iterations of the Chevrolet Camaro Indy 500 pace car sold in the thousands, but this year the only one you will see was the one in the race itself. A spokesman said "In order to keep special editions special, we can't go to that well too often."

A well that they will be tapping, however, is that of the mega hit Transformers and the upcoming sequel, Revenge of the Fallen. Rumor has it that Chevy will indeed offer a limited edition Bumblebee Camaro. The car, available with either V6 or V8 power, will be available for order June 1 and the first cars are scheduled to roll down the assembly line on the 24th of that month, which, not coincidentally, is the same day the movie is scheduled for released in the U.S.

Geiger builds a twin turbo Corvette Z06

Geiger Cars is the mastermind behind this in your face, lime green, 890 hp Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The same company that brought you creations like the Gulf-Wing Hummer and the Santa-style H2 have turned their attention to American muscle once again and have introduced an abundance of new performance parts for the Z06.

The twin turbo package includes a bump in displacement to 7.6 liters and upgraded cylinder heads, valve springs, cams, a larger mass air meter, and a less-restrictive exhaust system in addition to the dual turbochargers. The result is an impressive 890horsepower and 694 lb-ft torque, as well as a reported top speed of 220 mph. The drivetrain has been beefed up accordingly with a sturdier twin-disc clutch and a carbon fiber driveshaft.

PRESS RELEASE:

Who ever had the possibility to drive a Corvette Z06 never complained about the engine power for sure. After all, the US- American sport-car-icon is already powered by a series seven-liter-V8 engine with 512 hp. Even expert drivers should be careful behind the wheel of this steam hammer, novice drivers should definitely not get behind the wheel of the Z06. Only a madman would want to increase the output of this fast car significant. Karl Geiger from Munich is such a madman.

To be able to increase the output of an internal-combustion engine substantially there are basically three king ways: more cubic capacity, a charge using a turbocharger or compressor as well as classic tuning in the form of the modification of locomotive engine parts as well as the supplying of fuel and air. GeigerCars.de has a long time experience in all of these divisions this is why Karl Geiger decided to go all three ways for the ultimate engine on base of the Corvette Z06. The thought of the final outcome is going to make the mouth water of hp-freaks. But one step at a time.

Pure Power

The Geiger Bi-Turbo power package covers a flaring of the cubic capacity up to impressive 7.6 litre. Modifications are made to the engine block, to the cylinder heads and the crank motions. Geiger employed amplified insert springs, spring cups made of titanium, sport camshafts as well as a 100 mm air mass flow meter. The dampers and the induction tract have been dealt with. The cores of the engine tuning are the two high performance turbocharger, which blow air in the combustor. And because everything that comes in in the front has to get out in the back, GeigerCars.de installed a sport exhaust system with four end pipes, each one as thick as an arm, and sport catalysts.

The paper mould of the cubic capacity giant is already more then impressive: unbelievable 890 hp at 6.100 U/min as well as 940 Nm at 4.500 tours shows the data sheet. The maximum speed is about 354 km/h. However, only the driving experience makes one comprehend what the numbers on the paper really mean. I do know what I am talking about. With an angry thunder and fizzle the Bi-Turbo-Corvette answers every gas blow with an unbelievable thrust, which seems to have the possibility to cause a whiplash injury. Pure poison! Karl Geiger has chosen his distinctive Geiger Green colour for this wild animal not without cause.

Carbon fibre drive chain

Of course there is not used a serial Z06 drive chain. Built in is a boosted transmission as well as a two-disc-transmission made of carbon in combination with a cardan shaft made of carbon.
Shaft drives and differential gear were boosted as well.

A further challenge is the diversity of the engine power on the street. Geiger hoisted in the front 285/30 an in the back 345/25 tires on bright black coated rims. Behind the rim star appears a high performance brake system with grooved 380x32 mm brake discs and 6-piston-back gauges in the front and 355x32 mm discs and 4-piston back gauges in the back. The Geiger sport undercarriage contains sport shock absorber with 16-fold adjustable compression, tighter compound springs as well as stabilizers for font and back axle.

Rendered broad

As usual Geiger used the in-house GT-Kit for the Corvette – car body. The bug and the rear show a completely new and brawny appearance. The louvred in the black hood not just look spectacular but also serve a technical purpose: they guard against thermal indispositions of the turbo engine.

Completely ridiculous: Ariel Atom 500 V8

Light weight + lots of power = speed. A simple formula that usually results in either a) a heavy car with lots of power, or b) a light car with good power. And for good reason, as too much power with too little weight could be disastrous for some more, shall we say, unskilled drivers.

However, in rare instances some choose to take it to the extreme. In which case we have the following to offer: the Ariel Atom 500, which weighs 1,102 pounds and sports a 2.4 liter, 500hp V8. The engine is a marvel in itself, achieving peak power at 10,000 rpm.

Conservative estimates put performance from 0-60 under 3 seconds and 0-100 in seven seconds which shifting through a sequential six speed gearbox. For those brave enough to own or drive one, pricing and availability haven't yet been announced.

400 hp 5.0 "Coyote" confirmed for 2010

5.0 is a magical displacement, one that means a lot to the Ford loyalists, and now the designation is going to make a comeback. Many moaned and groaned when the 2010 Mustang was released and retained the 'ol 4.6, but spy shots showing an aluminum engine under the hood of a new Mustang gave hope for the future.

According to Ford Australia's product development director, Russell Christophers, the U.S. team is indeed working on an all-new, aluminum double-overhead cam 5.0-liter V8 – codenamed "Coyote" – with output expected to crest 400 hp and around 400 lb-ft of torque. Christophers told Australia's Drive, "I have seen the performance curves and it is a pretty good engine."

The new 32-valve, 5.0-liter V8 is expected to be fitted to the Mustang and F-150 sometime in 2010, replacing the current 4.6- and 5.4-liter. This will certainly give the new Camaro a little run for it's money.

New Shelby Series II roadsters for sale

Back in the 90's Carroll Shelby sought out to do something much more ambitious than just hot rodding an existing platform - he built an entire car from scratch. The Series 1 featured a lightweight aluminum honeycomb chassis, carbon fiber body, sophisticated coilover suspension and a 4.0-liter V8 created for the Indy Racing League.

Unfortunately building a production car is not easy business, and the high production costs that doubled the car's $100,000 selling price and an engine switch to a 320 hp Aurora based V8 led to only 250 cars being sold.

In 2006 Shelby announced that they would be continuing production of the car, renaming it the Series II. The car featured a revised front end and a price tag of $225,000. Alas, the Series II never materialized due to the high costs associated with recertifying the car with Federal standards.

But there are indeed a few Series II bodies laying around, and Superperformance Distribution has a few for sale. Each is sold without an engine or transmission. Rumor has it that only four examples were ever built, making this potentially a very rare snake indeed.

Stock 2008 Dodge Viper runs 10 second quarter mile

Positive news from the Pentastar is hard to come by nowadays, what with the Chrysler bankruptcy mess and the not so secret fact that they've been trying to sell off the Viper brand. Now 800 or so dealers are getting the 'ol pink slip.

But the fact of the matter is, the Viper is and always has been one of the fastest cars you can roll off the factory floor. And it shows in a confirmed dragstrip pass made in a bone stock Viper SRT10 Convertible with 100 miles on the odometer, ripping off a 10.92 second quarter mile.

Most of your media outlets have tested the car in the 11.6-11.9 range, so with the right conditions and driver we can see how this is possible.

Saleen SMS 570X Dodge Challenger

Steve Saleen has taken the wraps off his latest version of the Challenger, and it's a step above the 570 he recently introduced to the world. Dubbed the 570X, the car utilizes a 6.0L V8 tuned to a reported 700 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque.

The engine features forged internals lying underneath CNC ported aluminum heads. All that power is backed by a six speed manual. The car makes it's big power courtesy of the SMS 296 supercharger.

While the supercharger comes as part of the 570X package, it will also fit other Chrysler LX products including the Charger, Magnum, and Chrysler 300C. SMS also promises that "aftermarket fitments" are in the works for both Ford and General Motors products.

No word yet on pricing and availability, so stay tuned for more.

Hero Edition Corvette ZR1

This 1 of 1 Corvette ZR1 has been created by GM solely to benefit the Kid's Wish Network. While there are no changes to the drivetrain that powers this special edition 'vette, it's not like you really needed any anyway.

What makes the Hero Edition unique from all the other ZR1's out there is mainly visual cues. There is a graphics package with red accents in lieu of the normal blue. Other special bits include "additional carbon fiber components."

You won't be able to order your own Hero car, however, as it is a prize destined for the Corvette Dream Giveaway. Joining this car will be a restored 1967 Corvette, also in tuxedo black, with red accents and a 427 sporting 390 horsepower.

There's no limit on how many $3 tickets you can buy if you want to win. Shelley Breiner, Exective Director for the Kids Wish Network, expects this lone drawing to fund its Hero of the Month program for at least an entire year.

Consumer Reports pits modern muscle cars against each other in battle of supremacy

Consumer Reports is famous not for comparing high performance vehicles, but the reliability of say, econo boxes and mid size sedans. But the guys and gals that work at CR are true car fans, and that fact is quite evident in this video which pits the three modern muscle cars against each other.

The video previews an upcoming comparison test between the Ford Mustang GT, Chevy Camaro SS, and Dodge Challenger R/T. Watch the rubber burn.

ASC creates a new Trans-Am using a 2010 Camaro

We knew, inevitably, that someone would do this. Unfortunately it won't be Pontiac, since they're being sent to the automotive graveyard by GM as part of it's restructuring efforts.

ASC (American Specialty Cars) stepped up to create the brother-of-Camaro clone, and it turned out better than we would have expected. And the best part is that ASC can take your 2010 Camaro and transform it into a Trans Am for you.

Details are scarce for now, but we'll be sure and have more as soon as it becomes available.

2010 Chevrolet Corvette changes, including Grand Sport

At the annual C5/C6 Bash at the Corvette's Bowling Green Assembly Plant, numerous changes were outlined for the 2010 Corvette line. In addition to the rebirth of the Grand Sport, the latest 'Vette will feature launch control as standard on all manual transmission models, Performance Traction Management on the ZR1, being able to order any Corvette in any color, and a cashmere interior package available on the Z06 and ZR1.

The event also featured presentations showing the Grand Sport's technical aspects and launch control. The most humorous part of the presentation is when the speaker notes that use of launch control will not void your warranty, an obvious jab at Nissan's ironic GT-R warranty.

Classic Design Concepts Group 2 Widebody Challenger

Classic Design Concepts is a Novi, Michigan based company that has been modifying cars since 1990. Their most recent creation is seen here, the Widebody Challenger, based on the wildly popular new Dodge musclecar.

The Group 2 Widebody Challenger made it's debut at SEMA in 2008, and now the 575hp creation has hit the street. The quality of the build on the Widebody is much closer to OEM than aftermarket, and just goes to show you why several manufacturers such as Ford, Saleen, and Roush have relied on CDC to produce parts for them.

CDC doesn't produce entire cars like many others, however, opting to simply offer high quality parts for enthusiasts. They just prefer to let customers create their own unique cars.

Included in the Group 2 package are new composite front fenders, left and right spoiler canards (side wings) and rear "billboard" panel and fenderwell extensions. In total, the new body panels add six inches to the width of the Challenger.

The car can then accommodate 11.5-inch wide wheels at the rear and 10-inch wide wheels up front, enabling better grip for acceleration and cornering. Customers can purchase the package with USW 20-inch three-piece wheels and Pirelli PZero Rosso tires or find their own combination. Other options from Classic Design Concepts include a stainless steel wire mesh grille, sequential taillights and a fully functional shaker hood system, a CDC specialty.

This particular Challenger also has a few additional components not sold directly by Classic Design Concepts. Under the hood is a Vortech supercharger system that works in conjunction with the shaker hood system to boost the Hemi V8 to 575 horsepower, and out back, a Corsa exhaust system ensures a true muscle car sound emits from the tailpipes. Lastly, a KW coilover suspension system helps reduce body roll and improve handling, and a Baer drilled-and-slotted big brake upgrade provides additional stopping power.

All of the body components are $11,995 installed, or $5,895 not including wheels and tires. The shaker system, including the composite flat hood, adds another $2,495. To build this exact car, you'd also have to spend $6,400 (Vortech supercharger), $3,095 (KW adjustable coilovers), $3,525 (Baer Extreme Plus brakes) and $1,870 (Corsa exhaust system). Add that to the $42,745 price of a base Dodge Challenger SRT8 plus $695 for the manual transmission, and you end up with a $72,820 car.

Base vehicle specs:
2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8
6.1LHEMI
5-Speed Automatic Transmission
